I've only posted in this subforum a couple of times.
I am looking to purchase my first Busse Combat knife sometime in the near future. I already own 3 rats and a dog (RMD, HRLM, RS, SYKCO 511), and since it doesn't look like the swamp is going to bring out a Swamp Muk in the near future, I can't stop myself from pining after a Hog Muk. When I first became interested in nessmuk-inspired designs, I poured through webpages looking for my favorite and think Busse nailed it...

But I missed the ganza and haven't seen many of these come up on the 2ndary market wearing canvas-micarta scales. Did everybody order G10 because they prefer it or because of the cost-savings achieved in the ganza or what? Who all has Muk's with canvas-micarta scales and how attached to them are you? Pics appreciated.

And as a secondary note, who all has put one of these to USE and can relate their likes/dislikes. Thanks to all.

You're right. I've never seen any canvas Micarta Hog Muks for sale... but they exist, evidently.

Mine is black canvas micarta, I'll try to get a pic as soon as I can. :)

They exist, but because Jerry kindly offered us G-10 options at the same price as micarta on top of a really good price for them, I can see why so many took the free upgrades over the basic micarta.

I haven't put any to use yet...I keep forgetting to get a sheath ordered for it so I can carry it without getting sliced up (They are really sharp!).
By the way, have you tried posting a wanted to buy thread in the Knives: Wanted To Buy forum?

...And yes, I am very attached to mine so please don't ask. :)

Good luck on your hunt cause that is the fun of it. I was lucky enough that a very generous hog sold her to me. It is a great knife! I cleaned two deer with it last year in Kentucky. It was flawless.

Yeah, only video I've found of the knives, watched it WAY too many times :p

Jaxx, thanks for the caption describing which handles are which in that picture, I had already pulled it from the web and saved it on my desktop to increase my temptation. I figured that the savings-value factored into a lot of decisions on the Muk. To me G10 is only an upgrade in weight (and usually cost as well), i just love the feel of canvas micarta on my rats... but I've never actually handled G10 on a Busse before. The black paper and black G10 are also very attractive to my eyes, so I guess that widens my preferences slightly. Which handle do you prefer?

And does anyone actually look at the "wanted" section? There are never any threads in there... I guess I assumed that if someone really wanted to sell/trade a Busse or needed some money, they'd just post it in the exchange. With how rarely they show up on the exchange, I didn't have much hope of individuals with specific configurations being all that willing to let go of them (like yourself). But... I'll give it a shot.

She looks beautiful! Thanks for the review, and let me know if ever you decide to let her go to another

Hmm... I seem to remember something about this knife being a "nuclear mayonnaise spreader"? I guess mustard works too!

Thanks for the pics all!

Only gold or above members are allowed to sell on the forums, so you can't see them because you wouldn't be allowed to act on them anyway.

Might as well give it a shot. I got my first Busse through that forum.

For me, I like the black paper micarta the best based on the feel of it for this particular knife, but I would say that if I had planned to use it as a main woods knife, and I actually spent more time in the woods :o :D then I would have chosen #27 (my usual "user" numbered Busse) to have canvas micarta instead as it is "grippier". If I planned on it being used for animal processing in addition to other tasks, then G-10 would have been considered over the other choices as it is easier to clean thoroughly due to it being so dense & hard, and it not absorbing liquid very much... But I like to have options, which is why I snagged a bunch with different handles. ;)

BTW, your WTB post is visible in the list of threads there. uyotg is correct about Registered Members only being able to see their thread alone on that forum while Gold Members and up can see all of the threads posted there. Many, including myself, check that forum at least once a day, so there is significant activity there. :)

 Good to know that about the WTB forum, makes sense.

Jaxx, I sure wish I could afford so many options like that! You have my envy in that regard... as do many in this subforum!

chiral, as far as experience with wet/bloody handles goes, I lean far towards the canvas micarta over G10.

When micarta gets wet it gets a bit more grippy, that goes for blood as well. G10 gets slick, dangerously slick.

After a few hundred pigs, deer, rabbit, fish, and other animals through a life time of hunting and fishing I really really like canvas and linen micarta for a working knife. Wood, G10, and other non porous materials get very slick when wet and your hands are numb from the cold and only getting worse. I like the texturing and the grippy natire of micarta. Others may find mileage may vary. :D

I've slipped off knives when its cold, wet, and basically uncomfortable. Your wanting to get er done and get back to that warm fire and warm drink and things get a little blurry, snap! No fun.

Other than that, the G10 is really pretty, only the venerable snake skin micarta comes close in looks, well that and black paper as Jaxx said. I love black paper. :)

Thanks for the review.
Yeah, my first hunting knives were polished wood and phenolic handles (Buck) and man were those tricky to hold onto in the freezing cold and juicy slickness field-dressing deer with the sun just filtering through the trees. My dexterity would be mostly gone from waiting since before dawn to catch some young buck out for a morning stroll. After the first cut, I'd stick my hands into the abdomen to just warm them, then back to work with slickened hands which I'd occasionally wipe off on the snow. Cold, wet, slick, hungry, proud ... best to have a good grip on that knife! I heard good things about canvas micarta so made some pricy purchases but the micarta was waxed & polished and not much different. Then I caught onto Bussekin and now own a few rats, all black canvas micarta and all with incredible grip (and better ergonomics than any knife I'd used up to then) - definitely a step up from the Gerber Gators I'd been borrowing (which were warmer in hand however, thanks to the rubber insulation). I only hope my wife won't castrate me with it if I spring for INFI

Nothing beats that feeling when you bring down that nice buck eh? Even the numbing cold cant cut the euphoria. :D

But a cut hand out in the boonies, well, it can wait till camp. :p

My worst time was when a local hunting camp brought all their kills to us for skinning and quartering, good golly what a night. 15 deer, at least they gutted most of them. That and two hangers was a life saver. I learned so much that night. Letting someone else take over while I nursed a scotch and water and waited for the feeling to come back to my hands is a good thing! :)

The knives, oh the knives. The wife has gotten to the point of simply rolling her eyes when I bring a new one home. But it took a lot of work to get to that point. "Its for sheathmaking dear" was and is the best excuse, but a close second is a time saver for hunting "less sharpening means quicker home!"

I hear ya on the polished micarta, it kind of defeats the point eh? And I do fully understand the insulation of rubber handles, lots of gives and takes. I think most of it goes down to ergonomics, the handle must fit securely in the hand no matter how little feeling is left in them. A slightly slick handle in a warm hand can be a "owl poop on glass" scenario with cold wet hands.

Quoting Leatherman^^^^^^^
Maybe I should take up sheath making! LOL!

Chiral,
I am also a big sucker for canvas or linen. They clean up very well with soap and water and and to me gave a much warmer feel than g10. Good luck. Mine came from poking around like we ALL do. WTB forum will work also.

True that! :D, I know I am truly blessed to be a sheath maker and get to play with all the nice knives that I do. :) Both mine and those I get for fitting.

Agreed on the clean up, I've never had a problem with canvas and linen cleaning up after a work session. Even after that marathon deer cleaning where the mess was dried and nasty, all the knives I used cleaned up nicely. A rag and dish soap does wonders. A scrub brush helps get into those little areas around the rivets and in the corners of the handles.
