I'm soon going to be receiving my Eagle Scout rank, and I've been planning on buying a special knife for myself to commemorate this event.

I have my heart set on a Sebenza. That being said, I can't decide on which size, and any subsequent model beyond that. I figured CRK's own forum here would be the best place to come to get an expert opinion!

Thank you for the help.

God bless.

KATN,

Wade

I would recommend handling one at a knife shop or show first, so you have an idea of what's too big or small. For a first I prefer a large classic w/plain handles.

If you want a nice easy pocketable EDC blade id just get the small.
If you want something with a bit more grunt that you will be able to use at work etc. id probably go for the large.

The difference between the Regular, Classic, inlayed and plane is pretty much all just styling.
They are all fantastic knives you will get a life times worth of use out of.

If you was me and I was you, you would probably get the large plane regular
You could also get it engraved to commemorate your achievement.

+1 on that! I said this before the Large will get smaller the more you carry it:D

When I was in Scouts, many of us carried 110's. The Large is just a little smaller than the 110, and much lighter and easier to deploy.

that's a great idea.

i prefer the large, i have med hands. i always found the small just a little too small. and to me the large is actually a med sized folder.

congrats on your achievement, certainly something to be very proud of!!!

If you can't handle them ahead of time and you have to close your eyes and pick one, then I'd agree that the large regular plain scale is the place to start. I think Morimotom is right, it's actually a medium sized folder that carries well in pocket, IWB, or in a CRK sheath.

FWIW, I have both models in both sizes and I find that the regular handles just fit my hand better when I'm using the knives. The classics look great, the regulars work better for me. And I like the blade profiles on the regulars a bit better than the classics.

I think the small feels better plain and the large better when there is something for grip...micarta, wood etc. (Not that you need it) That being said: in areas where you would want to put the knife in your pocket the large would be a little big IMHO. I carry my small a lot and sometimes I use it as a money clip and it is awesome. The money actually helps keep it in my pocket.

Thanks for the input gentlemen.

What would be the best place to order from? I usually do all my purchasing from New Graham, but I'm typically a Spyderco guy. What's the most reputed dealer for Sebenzas? Thanks again for the help.

So far I`ve ordered my CRK`s from True North Knives and Knifeart. I can recommend them both, though right now I favor TNK. I think New Graham wouldn`t be a bad choice either, though I´ve only ever bought from them once-and that was in their store.

You might want to try this

I purchased 2 Sebenzas from him, no BS and fast shipping. Rock bottom prices ($385.00) for the plain Large Sebie + free shipping in the US.

Congratulations Wade!

You might want to contact CRK directly and see if Lisa can/will do a Unique Graphic for an Eagle Scout. Now that would be a real special commemorative.

I, too, would recommend getting the large. They definately get smaller the longer you carry them. I used to carry a sm. classic and now it's the Umnumzaan.....I don't even notice the difference in the pocket.

Have fun picking out that special one.

Wade,

Congratulations!

I have both the regular and classic versions of the Sebenza. Both are excellent designs; choose the one that best suites you.

As others have mentioned, I too suggest you get a plain model and have it engraved to commemorate your achievement.

Cheers,
dan :)

Congradulations, I'm an Eagle Scout of 2004, so the feeling is mutual and well understood . Seems like you've been a young member here for a good two years since you have to make Eagle before you turn 18 . Besides that, I too would recommend the large sebenza with regular handles. The graphics are nice looking, but they don't appear to be much as a work or camping knife.

Not to deter you from CRK, but buck makes a special engraved 500 model just for Eagle Scouts, you just call it in, tell them your troop number, board of review date, name and council and for about $35.00 you get a perfectly good knife (comes with a sheath too I believe). You are basically only paying for the engraving and the knife is like it's free!

I would still get the sebenza no matter what, but maybe hinting to your parents about the buck would be a little bonus as it's not that much in price (ten times less than the sebenza). Congradulations again, J.

First, let me add my congratulations on your achievement. That is a lot of hard work and you should be proud.

Agree with all that has been written - if you get the chance handle one and see what fits for you. I tried both the small and large, classic and regular, and found the small classic was a better fit for my hand. In addition, I work in an office full of sheeple, so the smaller sebbie is definitely better. I found the small to be about the same size as a Benchmade HK 14210

I would agree to get it engraved - that is quite an accomplishment and you earned it. Good luck!

From one Eagle Scout to another, "Congrats!"

I like the small for the pocket and the large for the hand. And I actually prefer the plain.

I have always preferred the small, but buy either and you'll be happy (and you'll want another one within a few weeks, I do:D)

Man that's a sweet deal. That's why buck kicks ass. I'd get that and the crk. But I'd get the zaan all the way. It's a gorgeous knife and heftier than the seb but also carries in the pocket very well. I think the swedge on the back would be perfect for striking fire steel.
