Resale value of older XM-18s?

I have a couple of mid-2010s XM-18s which are surplus to my requirements.

These are in completely unused, as new condition, and were bought new by me. There's a bowie and spanto, in s35vn and 20cv respectively. Standard G10 handles, but with anodized standoffs.

I was just wondering if anyone can give me a sense of what's a reasonable price to offer them at. Given that they predate the use of bearings and lock-bar inserts, I'm assuming they're worth less than newer models, but I don't now if there's any collector market for the older versions.

I’m not a Hinderer expert but I’ve bought and sold a few and keep an eye on pricing trends. I think I’d list them at 400, be happy with 375 and settle for 350 (325 for a quick sale). I do think there’s less overall desire for pre-triway but some users and collectors prefer them for their simplicity.

I’d spend good money on an old XM-18 with a pond scum scale…

Depends on the knife. Bowies are fairly rare, and the pre-tri-way ones even more so. I was sent several unsolicited offers when I posted a picture my Gen 4 Bowie on facebook a few months ago, all of which were in the $500-600 range. I couldn't talk to any of the other blade styles.

I get the sense that small details make a big difference in value for Hinderers. I had a small XM18 before the bearings and inserts, recurve with blue anodized titanium. I bought it at retail and figured I would have to take a slight loss on it, but it very quickly sold at a slight markup and I broke even after fees etc.

I don't know if even the Hinderer fans could come to a consensus on value, you might just list it high and progressively lower the price until someone buys it.

Thanks for these inputs. It's good to hear that there is still likely to be demand for the Gen 4 models.

I'll put these two on sale when I'm back in the US at the start of July (along with a number of other things). I'll try to remember to put a note in this thread, when I've listed them, in case anyone is interested.

Certainly a demand, but not outrages prices such as an older Sebenza. The only Hinderers I am interested in are the old ones
Good luck on yor sale

I haven't kept up on the CRK market, what older Sebenzas have gone through the roof? Do you mean ones like the 25 or further back to the BG42 bladed regulars?

The later Gen 4 will do better as they fixed the detent and the action really improved. I regret selling my late gen 4 and would buy another in a heartbeat.

To me (who is an XM-18 fan but not a collector) it largely depends on the action of the knives. If they are smooth and flip on par with the ones with the tri-way pivot system, I'd happily pay as much as or even a bit more than the latter ones. I think I had four or five pre-triway XM-18s and two of them had as great action as triway ones while the other two or three were a bit sluggish (requiring a bit wrist action).

As an example, I paid $25-45 more than going rate (resale) for an older Gen 2 NF 3” XM-18. I wanted the simpler knife when new production was available for cheaper…BUT, $25-45 was my limit.

I think older Hinderers have some value, but it’s slight against new production, and then only to a collector mentality. A new Hindererer shopper will likely want tri-way and the various “improvements”.

I haven't handled them in some time, but IIRC, these came from the era when the action was still a bit of a crap-shoot, but I think it's not bad on these ones. I'll check before I list them.

Depends. I had a custom recurve I got at table price ($550) that brought $1800. But standard configurations aren’t bringing the scalper prices of old. I saw many sell in the $650 to $750 range, those days are gone.I wouldn’t mind finding a lefty but it’s not on my must have list,
