Aloha ALL!
A few days ago, I *got* one of the production version RESCOM Folder's (RF from this point on) from Boker Germany. I got it prior to going to Hell, so I brought it with me to share with my co-workers.
We did some cutting tests using old sheets, tightly wound of all different diameters, to simulate that which an inmate would use to hang themselves with. First I used just the hook area on the RF. This was very sharp and cut through the rolled sheet of the same diameter as the hook on the RF with ease. Then, "Uh oh, sheet's too large for the hook!" Not a problem for the RF. So long as you can get a slight, and I mean slight sawing motion going on material that is larger in diameter than the hook size of the RF, it was pretty much push, pull, push, cut! Very fast, especially on larger diameter sheet rolls! Everyone was impressed.
Then I got "cocky". I got an old magazine, tore it in half, wound it up very tightly, and proceeded to cut through it with the RF. There was NO way that a simple pulling cut would go through something like this, but as mentioned already, simply using the sawing motion first, allowed me to cut through this magazine pretty quickly. I mean, we were doing the scenarios like, "Okay, ready, set, go" kinda thing...not just taking our time cutting through the said items.
This went on the rest of the evening, using more sheets, rubbish bags and such. Cardboard didn't stand a chance...neither did envelopes for that matter! Heck, even when the nurse came by to pass out meds, he commented on how we all should be issued such a tool!
We all got to talking about how well this RF performed...and how versatile it was being able to cut "things" larger than the hook portion via the serrated section. Next day, I looked for stuff to cut around the shed. I wish I knew where I put that polyrope, but that will have to wait for another day...
Parachord, vines, rubber tubing, web belts, all of these fell easily with just the hook portion of the RF. Weedwhacker line required a bit of a pull, but if the serrated portion of the RF is used first, it won't stand a chance.
BTW, one good thing about the RESCOM Folder is the fact that the Spyderco Sharpmaker rods can resharpen the serrated portion as well as fit in the hook area. Even my favorite sharpener, the Spyderco Pro-File set fits, and has an advantage over the Sharpmaker rods due to the shape on it's "edges". That being said, them Lansky "dog bone types" can easily touch up the RF if need be.
I got a "good feeling" about this SF Variant...and I cannot wait to get more of them come October when they *should* be released for sale! As a true rescue type blade, it can go anywhere...either on your person, or in your vehicle...for divers and fisherman, rafters, florists, LEO's, EMT's, military...whatever, etc...the RF is for real.
Anyway, thanks again everyone and God bless!!!
