just wondered if any of ya'll have ever purchased rescue insurance?
have pals who live outside steamboats springs and we have done a cupla horseback overniters into the mt zirkel wilderness area. its lovely and rugged. they know the area well. i only know from these two trips. my pals insist we go to town and purchase rescue insurance before the trip. we also register time going in and when we expect to return and notify the ranger headquarters when we do return. the ins is $8. a helicopter ride out if you get injured is $8000. the premium $ go directly to maintain the wilderness area. this is the only place ive ever done this. wondered how typical it is?

When you buy a big game hunting permit in CO they tack on a 25 cent "search and rescue fee." Every big game hunter in CO buys rescue insurance- sort of.

first I've ever heard of it, but a pretty good idea, especially since the premiums stay "in-park" as it were.

I generally maintain insurance with DAN (Diver's Alert Network). If my memory is working, it provides rescue coverage when you are more than 50 or so miles from home and can cover certain non-dive emergencies.

Some of my friends who are better funded than I am hunt in Africa and buy rescue/evacuation insurance from MedJet. We once had a woman speak to the Adventurers' Club who was fighting AIDS as a result of a transfusion received in Africa, so the MedJet might be worthwhile.
