Rescue Knives

I wanted to get my father a rescue knife for his birthday as he travels around 70 miles round trip each morning to work and back. There are often lots of accidents along the route he drives so I've been wanting to make sure that he'd have the tools needed to extricate himself in the event of a car crash.

Requirements: Carbide glass breaker, seat-belt cutter and knife blade. Blade length isn't an issue. Sadly, no autos.

I've looked at the Spyderco Assist and the Benchmade Triage series and I was wondering if there were any other good alternatives. Thanks guys!

Budget is about $200.

On the low end of the price range is the H&K Ghost 3.0 and 3.5 Both have seat belt cutters and window breakers and I think that they are anywhere from $20 to $60. I believe that they are made overseas by Benchmade.

Does not fit your description 100%, but what about a Buck Redpoint Rescue to get this thread started? :)

I looked at it and I don't feel comfortable with the opening mechanism on it, having to depress a switch or button then sort of "roll" the blade out while or after a car accident could be extremely difficult. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

I remember seeing something by Gerber some time ago too. It had a seatbelt cutter a window punch and an oxy tank wrench. I think it was a Hinderer design as well. Just throwing out idea's here. :D

Edit: It is the Gerber Hinderer CLS

Automatic center punch works well.
There is however some explaination to these things. Winshields are much stronger then side windows ! Use tools on lower corners of side windows as there isn't much 'give' to absorb impact.Any sharp knife will cut a seatbelt but a properly made hook design like my Benchmade works the best.
If you are injured wait for the EMS people to get you out unless the car is on fire ! don't make injuries worse.

I never knew that about the windows mete, thanks.

I don't have any experience with rescue knives but if I were in your position it would be the 915 triage.

I've got the Gerber. While stopped at a light, I was hit from behind by a texing teenager going 40 mph. Fortunately, no one was injured, but everything inside my SUV was scattered end to end including the Gerber I had clipped to the visor on the driver's side. So now I have a sheath for it attached to my seat belt. Be sure your dad figures out a good place to keep his knife so it will be easy to locate if he needs it.

+1 for the triage, I got one, its great for an EDC as well as a rescue tool. The G10 is EXTREMELY textured for positive grip

I have a triage and it's pretty light for the tool it is, and it's in my edc rotation. Great carry for long trips or treks, and it's in my edc rotation.
