I've been price shopping and such, and many places stock the previous and current versions of the Rescue. What is the difference between the two, besides $15-20 difference in price?

Current Rescues have ATS-55 blades and the removable, right/left metal clip (versus the older GIN/AUS steel blades and molded plastic clips).

Handle ergonomics are mostly the same.

Joel

Is the change in blade steel generally regarded as being worth the extra loot?

yeah, I know...thats a personal choice. I guess I should ask how much of an impact this makes on performance.

Thanks!

I've never used Gin-1 or Gin-2, but I'd bet $15 that ATS-55 is better. Actually, though, I think the reversible clip is worth that much in and of itself. And I'm not even left handed.

Sweet.

Thanks David, thanks Joel

I agree that the ATS55 is probably worth the diff. But to me, the real benefit is the metal clip change. Too many molded pocket clips have been snapped-off for daily carry to ignore! Good move using metal and ambidexterous placement!

Brian

Yeah, the reversible clip and improved grip surface make it very worth it.

I am absolutely in love with my 5 wk old Delica and one day old Native, and a good bit of that is the usefulness inherent in the improvements, and the ATS-55 has had no complaints so far, at least none I have heard...

Weigh in with your thoughts on the Worker 2000.

One may want to keep an Eye out for my review of the Bob Kasper designed, Kevin Gentile modified AFCK and interview of Bob Kasper. Sorry about the wait, my review and interview should be online shortly, look for it right here at BladeForums.com. The delay has been getting pictures, luckily Spark has graciously offered to do the pictures. Knife writer I may be, photographer I am not, yet.

A little late with this post, but work sometimes is so inconvenient.
I have carried one of the old model Rescues for nine years of EMS as well as six years on an EMS helicopter service, and have been very satisfied with its performance thus far.
(Actually, its my second..my black handled one was pocketed at a wreck after about a year...I replaced it with the yellow handled one & so far no one has stolen it!)
It keeps an edge about as well as anything I've carried and dresses up very well on one of the Tricep type sharpeners in short order.
I have been paranoid re. the pocket clip, but it hasn't snapped yet, even with some pretty rough usage.
Guess this is sort of a non-answer; but I like the old one so far that I'm saving up for one of the new 3/4 size Rescues; after I pay for BF Natives, that is.
Don't think you'll be sorry with either choice.

Yah. I can see the relative merits of blade steel and reversible/replacable clip easily making it worth the extra money.

I, of course, also subscribe to that all-too-american of traits; newer/bigger=better.

So looks like I'm buying a full-sized rescue 98. Thanks for the feedback, all

You may want to travel the following link to the Spyderco Forum, where I am building interest in a knife I like to call the Worker 2000. Your interest and innovation would be appreciated by me.

Guess its beating a dead horse since Coronach decided upon his Rescue model, but I saw something interesting at the Fire Dept Instructors Conf in Indy last weekend.
Ironstone is offering the Rescue blade with either a Snapit handle or a Remote Release handle, both in orange with black Kraton insert...they said black/black handle was also available. Price at show was 45.95 and 49.95 respectively.Looks interesting-guess I'll have something else to hang off uniform now. Anyway, thanks again Sal, for another useful and neat-looking tool.

Just a possible heads up here. The old Spyderco Rescue is listed under the closeouts page of: www.ultout.com at $24.95. The number in stock is listed as MAX, leaving me to doubt whether there are any left to be bought. If there are, $24.95 is an outstanding deal. One of the problems with the new 98 Rescues (I have 2 of them), is that the recess in the Zytel handle really isn't deep enough to prevent the clip from distorting the recess, if torque is applied to the clip such as when a clip snags on the arm-rest of a chair.

This can be remedied by supergluing the clip to the handle, but then again, that defeats the purpose of the reversible clip. Currently I walk around with a 98 Rescue in the left front pocket, and an AFCK in the right front. Best of both worlds I figure.

Ian

Hmmmmm. I 'decided' on the Rescue98 model, but I have not bought it yet. I'm in price-shopping mode. Stevie Ray (Vaughn?), am I to understand that what you saw at the Indy show was a modification/alteration/limited edition of a Spyderco product, or was this some other company doing something similar to the Rescue with those added features?

Any info you can provide would be great.

And Protein? You're like me. I'll end up with some flavour of Rescue, and I have an AFCK on the way.

Coronach, Ironstone is located in Golden, Co. home of Spyderco. They carry several Spydercos that they seem to have specially made for them. The two rescues mentioned appear to be the Rescue IIs from their online pics. Check them out at www.fe3stone.com or 800-828-1925. I've bought from them in the past and prices were fair and service good.

I checked it out...thanks for the info. I think I'm still gonna go with the rescue98, though. The ironstone knife was a modified Rescue junior...I want something with abigger blade (more blade=longer sawing stroke)...and if I need to rig up a clip-to-belt type thing, I'm not above modifying the knife myself.

Don't have anything to add to phanton4, as I was going to mention Ironstone's site that I found after returning from Indy.
.02 cents worth-I don't think you'll ever regret getting the full size Rescue, as it seems to be one of the items I continue to leave the house with all the time.
I think the small Rescue will have it's place as does the VERY small Rescue that stays on my keyring (Ladybug 2,if I remember the model correctly)
I don't figure this is the place for an old farts war stories, but I have been very satisfied and sometimes amazed with the things the "ugly" ole yellow Rescue has helped me with.
Get one, and I bet you'll get another...so to put up or shut up, you all prompted me to order my very own Rescue Jr.
Can't wait.
