Here's an interesting question. What is the rarest authenticated BUCK knife known to exist.

IMO, the 117 Boatmans knife, saw one on the bay a while back, beat to shit and it went for well over $500, I dont think there are very manyy left...

I agree on the 117 being extremely rare - I have seen less than ten of them. There are many "one-of-a-kind" knives so I will just address standard factory production models from the time of incorporation in 1961: try to find white melamine models -- any model but especially the 116 Caper or the 120 General. The only white melamine 116s and 120s I have ever seen or know of are the two of each in my collection. For each model, I managed to find one with leather spacers and one with hard fiber spacers. All of the other white melamines are similarly rare but these two models were the last to be added to my collection.

Yes I will agree the three knives mentioned are very rare . However, I'd have to say the ones from the late 40's and 50's from HK's collection are too . Its a broad subject . DM

Easy question. The rarest Buck is the one I dont want:p Sorry guys couldnt help it. Larry, we'd love to see some pics of those....please.:)

LMAO Kevin! Hk does have a mind blowing collection of rare ones and I really enjoyed his photos.I don't know the answer but to me it would be one made by Hoyt Buck.

I think that I remember that the reason the white one are so rare is that when they were first introduced they quickly started to split in the handles. With Buck quickly halting production. I think.

The 117 slipjoint, were re-blades of surplus sale bought WW2 lifeboat knives back in the - the shop was a lean to - shed days. A few people have one, but here are my two opinions.

Be careful they can and are easily faked. Buy extra carefully. And, for half a thousand I can buy a whole bunch of 300s, so have at them if you want one, I won't be competing...I have seen two for sale, and only seen in person Joe Housers example.

That's quite a hijacking, probably should've started a new thread for that.:thumbdn:

I love those old sheath knives,it shows they were built to last a lifetime, they look well made.I've never seen or handled any of those types of knives, but i'd give my right arm for some of those.

Here are a couple of photos of the 117 that I have sent to Leroy. Photos are not too good, but when it returns, I will post some good photos. This is only the third one I have seen.

HKingdom, any ideas as to what kind of blade steel that would be?Looks to definately be carbon, but what would they have used back then?

It is definately carbon, but how the blade was made or what steel, I have no idea. The blade was stained, but was not rusted and no chips in the wood handles, so I'm anxious to see how it turns out. I have no doubt that Leroy will do an excellent job on it.
