reshaping a CRKT Desert Cruiser

Just bought a Desert Cruiser and I like it alot. Only one problem.... the chisel edge. I think a two-sided edge would cut better and be easier to sharpen. How difficult would it be to convert this to two-sided cutting goodness? I have had good results with a Spyderco Sharpmaker and I have a good dual layer Arkansas stone. Suggestions?

A lot of people prefer the v-grind secondary bevel. A good stone is probably faster than the Sharpmaker. Although I use a Sharpmaker for maintenancce, I have a diamond stone for more serious edge work. It's not a big deal, just do it as if you are sharpening the opposite side, it won't take long.

Depending upon usage, the cutting performance should prove quite good with a proper chisel grind. As for sharpening, since you're only effectively sharpening a single edge, it should actually be easier (or at least just as easy) to sharpen as a more conventional edge would be, though I can't confirm this since I have no personal experience with one. With some work, you can certainly alter the grind, though my suggestion would be to sharpen the current edge to your liking, and then see how happy or unhappy you are with the knife's performance. My guess is that you will find it to function quite well.

It's not very difficult to do. I've done it with a cheap chisel-ground tanto just for the experience, as well as when I ground a serrated Spyderco to plain edge. Just grind the opposite side at the angle you want and keep eying the angles to make sure they're getting alinged nicely. After it's shaped pretty well you just sharpen it like any other V ground knife.

A friend of mine and I have both converted our CRKT Desert Cruisers to two-edge blades. Rather than re-shape the edge to produce a perfectly symmetrical blade, we decided to just back bevil a small strip on both sides at 40 degrees and then sharpen as usual at 30 degrees. Took about 30 minutes, works great. After about 5 more routine sharpenings, the blade should be totaly symmetrical.
