Reshaping double bit axe into single bit

So I was at a couple garage sales over the weekend and I picked up a fiberglass handled double bit axe for 5 buck, damage to one bit, but I figured it might be a project.

The one bit is severely damaged. No cracks or anything structural, but it looks like someone swung it into a brick wall  and it would require a lot of grinding and metal removal to even get the one bit back into working order. So instead of wasting time with that, I was thinking why not just grind the one bit down, leaving about 1.5" of material past the handle, and making it a single bit axe. Would make sure to quench the steel if it accumulating to much heat.

Let me know your opinions.

I'd just cut it off instead of grinding it down. Cutoff wheel on an angle grinder would do it just fine.

If doing so, you'll probably also want to grind the heel back a bit so that the hang is correct. It'll shorten the life a bit, though.
