Resiprene-C mod?

After seeing what Ban can do, I had an idea to make a satin Dumpster Mutt with a full height grind and a thinner edge.

I asked Ban if he could do it but he didn't know if he could sucessfully remove the Resiprene-C handle and replace it without messing it up.

Has any one tried something similar?

I'm also interested in doing something with the Resiprene-C handle on my INFI Coot. It's too small for my big mitts. Eric over at the Swamp said that there was nothing he could do about that. Great knife; I don't want to have to sell the thing.

I believe the Res-C handle is injection molded on to the tang, very unlikley you could remove and then put it back.

Troop, if the handle is too small, have you tried wraping it with grip tape or hockey tape?

I think the Res-C is probably on there for life. It is probably glued in with some serious epoxy and then you have the tube fastener as well. I imagine destroying it is all you can do. Someone over at the swamp had a howler redone with beautiful wood. If you could dig that thread up and ask the owner what he had to do to remove his handle, it might give you a good idea. For some reason I think it might have been Ian, but don't quote me on it. Eric might know better than I.

To remove the Res C handles at the shop they have to cut them off. I don't know that they can be removed with damaging them

Good luck

Eric

Bro', it's not the girth of the handle that annoys me, it's the length. It's too short. There's that little "swell" at the very rear of the handle that "gets in the way". I may just have to mod that thing and grind it down. :grumpy:

It's not that hard to get off.

Took the one off my S6.
Drilled the Tube out and then put the blade in a vice and worked the handle off.
It's kinda hard at first but once you get it going, it'll come off.
Putting it back on just took some patience.
It is a tight fit tho'....:)

That was a sweet mod. I'm pretty sure it was Tory's knife (360joules) -- done by Dick in Thailand or somewhere???

That's kind of encouraging.

The plan I discussed with Ban was to satin the whole thing which should thin out the tang a bit, then paint the tang to avoid rust under the handle. Even with a coat of paint, the tang should be a bit smaller than origional so I think it will be easier to re-install.

Of course, that's assuming I can remove the handle sucessfully.

I forgot to thank every one for the replies.

Also, I thought that the handles were injection molded on the blades but the Dumpster Mutt story has changed my mind. They said they found a box of Basic 3 handles and made knives. If they were injection molded on the handle, how would you put handles in a box?

I used a file and some sand paper on a Dog Father I used to have. The butt melted (don't ask :( ) and deformed a tad. I was able to clean it up pretty good. So perhaps you could file/sand down the parts in the way. I like using a file/sand paper over a grinder as I feel the grinder would remove material too fast. I have this issue with the Mutt. I love the knife but the handle feels a tad small.

Just a word of caution: I am not sure how far you could file various parts of the Res-C handle down before you hit the hollow parts or pockets if any.

Thanks, Bro'. Gotta' try something. (Sorry for the highjack.) :)

Troop: You bet. :)

If you are not dead set on keeping it Res-C you could perhaps have Ban remove the Res-C, do his mods, and then have another handle put on it for a hidden tang blade. At least we all know that our Res-C is on those blades solidly.

I'd like to see someone just cut all that nasty Rec-C off and do a partial tang along the back side of the handle with one sorta like many machetes that you see. With three rivets over wood :D that would be awesome and should STILL be strong enough!

Here it is, sooner than expected:

Ban did the job for me.

He reports that it was very hard to drill out the rivet because it would spin and wallow out the Resiprene-C. Next time I think I'll crush one side of the rivet with some Vise-grips and drill the other side to eliminate the spinning.

After the rivet was out it took some pretty good pounding to get the handle off but it survived. After the satin finish, the handle went back on pretty easy.

And there you have it, my SS4 BE (Ban Edition), the Dumpster Mutt BE is next.

Drilling out the rivet is a real biatch because the pressure from the Respirene-C is not enough to keep it in place while drilling. Removing the actual handle is actually quite easy. I just slowly tapped it out with a block of wood and hammer. Putting the handles back also required a couple of whacks from a rubber mallet.

I cut the Res C off some time ago. I was going to do something different but I like your idea pbubsy.
I made this quick mock up out of some softwood tonight, while I was MEANT to be watching football. The spine is exposed along the top, as you suggested. Apart from the top groove and and the housing cut in at the front, the wood is a solid piece. The rear 'rivet' is a piece of dowel and the front one is drawn on. I will probably change the position of the front one and may end up with 3 rivets. The tang is quite a chunk and so the design is easily strong enough.

This design weights the edge above the hand (hard to explain but kind of khukuri like). Not a bad feel at all and excellent when choked up by using the choil. The one change I will probably make is to file the area between the handle proper and the spine to put in a thumb grip and graduate the slope nicely. I think this will make the knife look better as well.

I quite like it so I think I will go this way with some decent hardwood. I really think the SS4 is one of the best offerings and always thought it deserved a better handle.
