Resisting Temptation

Whew, I lost my opportunity to pick up a Sage at a bargain price, even though I've coveted ever since seeing it.

I was making a lot of impulse buys and my savings acount was showing the effects of my 2009 buying binge.

So, I'm actually relieved that I withstood the urge to splurge. Like many people I've had to take a big paycut just to stay employed.

Saving money will be next to impossible now so luxury items will have to go on the backburner for a while.

Anyone else feeling the economic pinch?

I went on a massive spending binge recently buying a bunch of knives, getting on waiting lists for customs, having expensive mods done to knives like a m4 replacement blade for my small sebenza 21 just to name a few things and I'm trying to cut down now. I'm going to try not to buy anything until I sell some knives or atleast for a few months.

Oh yeah, I feel it and I've spent more than I should have this year. Especially in the last couple weeks with all the great deals that sprouted up. I'm gonna have to slow down for the new year. Maybe I can swing one a month, we'll see.

It's really hard to pass up on these great deals. I don't regret getting the G-10 Endura 4 at all for $69. The full flat grind VG-10 blade is awesome.

But, for some reason, I balked at getting another knife this year. I had to ask myself, do you really NEED that Sage, even if you'll probably never see that price again?

At least I have my house, car, and job still!

I personally carry my sage and sage 2 more than any other knife including edura and delica, but I do have a Para on the way..hah

anyways I feel you man, all the money that would go to savings have been goin to knives. We always find a way though...always.

I was doing fine with self control until about a week ago. All I'd done was buy a Meadowlark as a gift for Christmas and got myself a Persistence.
However, in the last week I've bought 10 Spyderco knives. :D

So yeah, feeling the pinch but had a moment of weakness. Two moments to be technical. Hehehe.

How to resist temptation... Just don't buy it and see if the desire goes away. If it does go away, then you didn't miss anything anyway. Around this time last year, I was going to order an E4 ZDP and a BM555HG both at the same time from NGK. They had the E4s in stock, but not the mini-grips. So they told me to wait for the mini-grip, but they'd send the E4. I kept waiting and waiting for the mini-grip for about a month. Finally they said they wouldn't be getting anymore in, and by that time I didn't want it anyway, so I saved myself the wallet damage.

One key to staying in control is to recognize the fact that most knife nuts like us get the scoop on new or upcoming knives sooner than sheeple or casual carriers and then we worry that they won't be available if we wait.

I went crazy in 2009 to the tune of between $6000 and $7000 in knives until I realized that I was collecting knives rather than just being a knife enthusiast who carried them. By collecting I mean I had more knives than I could could carry in a year if I changed my EDC more than once a week. I cleaned up that mess a little at the end of 2009 and sold off a bunch of knives that I was hoarding and not using. It was hard to let go of them at first but now that all but about 18 knives are sold to others who will use them (or collect them) I found a peace. But beware, I'm feeling that urge to buy more again. I just need to make sure if I buy to hoard that I actually buy something that is worth hoarding and not something than I can buy another of next year or the year after even.

I'm going to buy more knives this year but I'm going to buy only those knives that are really worth it to me. Knives that I like a lot rather than a knife that I "think" may be discontinued before the year is up. Same for Sprint Runs even.

I used to have a mentality that I would always buy two of any knife I thought I needed rather than just those knives that I know I want.

What I have left from my large 2009 stash are just those knives that I truly "want" regardless if they are out of production, going to be out of production or even widely available.

I love EDC knives.

Thankfully I didn't let things get too out of hand. Bought 2 Benchmades and 4 Spydies this year, and I feel pretty "Full".

$6-$7 grand is mind-blowing from my perspective; :o it's good that you have the means to do that! I would have checked in to a 12-step program before spending that much:eek:

I think im limiting my knife purchases to ones ive had my eye on for a while and can get a good deal on, and no more than 2 a month:thumbup:

There are no conquerors, but he who can conqueror the intoxication of temptation, and sometimes Im shit out of luck
