Respect for the srk

have one. great deal on a decent carbon steel and solid knife. mine came with a really bad obtuse edge from factory, but i fixed that.

I'd like to ask you guys something regarding your SRK in SK5. Where the spine meets the Kray-Ex handle, does it curve inwards slightly on one side?.

Here's some pictures, if they're too dark let me know and I'll re-upload them. I just took the pictures resized them slightly then uploaded them.

Both my Sk 5 SRK and Recon Tanto have that same thing. Not so with my other Cold Steel steels.

Dave

Okay, thanks Dave, I was was just wondering if mine was unique, it's not something that bothers me at all. As you can probably tell, it's a brand new knife.

I didn’t notice it till you mentioned it and yep my srk curves the same as yours, great knife though it’s built like a tank and performs well in the Bush for me.

I think I ordered up five or six SRKs around 1988 or 1989 for myself and some friends. I certainly kept two and used the hell out of one before someone decided they wanted it more than me. I still have the other here unused. The Australian agent at the time was also the agent for Eagle Industries so ordered up a bunch of SRKs without sheaths and paired them with one from Eagle Inc. The balance or the order when to good friends who were serving at the time, they too appreciated them. The SRK and Trailmaster are about the only CS fixed blades that float my boat.

The name SRK is misleading seriously. “Survival Rescue Knife” but the newest model doesn’t deserve that honest title.... I think that Cold Steel has to change the name… from Survival Rescue Knife to “Simple Un-RELIABLE Knife”…. SUK.....
Cold Steel is using the same name for any steel…. The latest and cheapest SRK (SK-5 steel version) is a real disappointment to me and to others also.
I am fully satisfied with my SRK VG1 which is an excellent tool, very very reliable and functional. The knife is penetrating a car bonnet without (almost) any damage (except 2 mm lose of the tip after 5 attempts), is prying, stabbing, digging, batoning, splitting woods, cutting meat, opening cans without any problem, skinning as well…
I believed that the SK-5 version of SRK would be another reliable tool, as the SRK VG1, but I realized from the first moment that it is not.
It is not a knife that you can rely on…. When I had received my SRK SK-5, some months ago, immediately tested it: batoning and stabbing in a pine tree. Unfortunately the tip snapped in the VERY FIRST ATTTEMPT…. it snapped instantly.
Additionally, in some blogs I have read comments like: “This knife will be a great choice for perhaps hunting and LIGHT wood work, but if you intend to use it as a "Survival" knife, where the blade might face some heavy stress, it WILL fail and you will die if it is your primary blade” as well as “Oh well, we see the death of another legendary American knife line”...

One of my favourite CS knives. Also the only knives I have ever lost (2 Carbon V SRK) or perhaps stolen. Still have one CV that has been through hell and back with a friend of mine. Also got the 3V and SK5 versions. Gave some away to friends who serve.

Were you recording during this testing?

I abuse the sk5 version because I have 3 they are cheap to replace, it has never failed me and works quite well in the bush.

Unfortunately, I was not so lucky... I keep my SK5, anyway, having repaired the damage.... But what I want to say is: no connection to the VG1 model... This is a REAL TOOL to rely on.

No, just was a simple test which I am doing with all my blades. Except the above mentioned case of the SK5 SRK, only a hollow grid Black Fox knife failed (a whole part of the blade just left... during batoning) as well as one very cheap hunting knife (the tip was bent...).

Fair enough man I have an aus 8 version I’ve yet to take out with me, have you tested s30v steel out in the bush? If so what are your thoughts.

To Dry-cell: That squished spot on the spine by the guard is common for most knives with reduced tangs and comes from when the blade is stamped out causing slight deformation on edge. My KA-BAR USMC and SOG NW Ranger also have that exact issue. Nothing to worry about.
