Hey fellas! So I have a beard and I've been looking for a good respirator got a while that I can wear while I'm grinding. The cheapest I've found was something like $450. That's a little steep for me right now.

I was talking to a buddy at work and he told me about this RESP O RATOR. It's not a bad looking setup, and it definitely would work for us bearded folk.

I have yet to order one. I'm kinda wondering if anyone else has one or experience with them. What do you think?

Hell I saw that thread but only read the first few posts to it. So I looked up the 3m 3900 full face and it wasn't what I was looking for. I guess I shoulda kept reading.

Thanks for the reference.

I've been using mine for over five years.

I far prefer a full PAPR system. It supplies clean air, face protection, and some cooling to the face and head. A beard is no problem, since it does not fit tight on the face ( which is what I love the most about it). While the Resp-O-Rator may be simple and convenient, I doubt you will stick it in your mouth and breathe only through it for hours in the shop. If you put on a PAPR, it is on all the time, keeping the particulates out of the air you breathe.

I use a PAPR at work. I agree that they are great and I also agree that the constant cool air running over your head and face make it pretty dern awesome. My problem is, the price tag associated with that system. Like I said earlier, I've found a decent set up for $450, but I can't to that right now.

I saw and read part of the aforementioned thread but didn't go far enough to see the resp o rator being mentioned.

I mean hell, if you guys know a good/decent/good enough PAPR for an affordable price I'd love to know.

Keep your eyes on ebay. I know a bunch of folks picked up an entire breathe easy set up for 75 bucks a while back.
Just be sure all the parts are included.

These mouthbit respirators also become a slobber & drool creator. Especially so when you have to be facing down to a workbench or something.
No bother to me, its sort of gross after a while. I keep a small loose rag over its exhaust port so its not dripping on the floor or workpiece.

Been working in the chemical industry for 37 years and wearing all types of respirators. OSHA regulations do not allow any facial hair on sealing surface of any respirator. Obviously you are not personally required to heed to this regulation, however it speaks volumes to the effectiveness of any respirator to protect you if it does not have a sufficient sealing surface. IMO the only option with a beard would be a supplied air setup with a constant purge. This supplies you air to breath and the purge flowing out around your beard keeps out inhalants. Not cost effective for most people's home shops. Just do all you can to protect your lungs. Unfortunately I have seen many ill effects over the years because people I worked with failed to protect themselves from inhalants.

I have one and I like it. It works for now until I can upgrade to a fresh-air/positive atmosphere unit.

Just so you know, if yu are working with micarta, bone, ivory, or other materials that may burn if ran too hard/fast; the stock filters will not work for the organic material ejected (evidenced by smoke). You will have to add on an organic prefilter, or order upgraded filters.

Good luck and enjoy it.

If your beard is long enough, here's the procedure.

1) Place your right hand against your throat.

2) Grasp a rubber band with your left hand.

3) In one swift motion, bring your right hand up your throat, around your chin, and up to your eyebrows, being careful to maintain contact with the contours of your face.

4) With your right hand still pressing against your eyes, stretch the rubber band in your left hand over the back of your head, above the ears, and under your nose.

5) Return hands to their original positions.

TA-DAH!... Respirator!

I have both the Resp-O-Rator and a Breath Easy air setup. There are pros and cons to each, as with anything I suppose, but they're both at the top of the list of effective options for bearded fellows.

I do tend to drool a bit when wearing the Resp-o-rator. While the creator claims that keeping your teeth clenched together will prevent this, I've not really found this to be the case. Yes, it helps, but it certainly won't eliminate it. It's also really not comfortable if you have to look/tilt your head up with it. I tried to use it to drywall a couple of ceilings, and it was somewhat in the way and uncomfortable. Looking straight ahead or down with it is better. The mouth piece could be a little more comfortable in general, but I suppose it gets the job done. Personally, I think the price is about twice what it should be for what you get, and I wish the plastic was a little thicker. I already cracked the cross bar that goes behind your neck, when I tried to pull one of the sides loose to put it on. They definitely don't use any more materials than they need to on this thing.

Now, what do I like? It's light weight, it's convenient, you can pop it out to take a drink, or wear it with a face shield or hood, and for the most part, it stays out of the way. You can also wear safety glasses with it without worrying about fitting weird or fogging up.

Now, I must admit, I've not been using my breathe easy as much as I thought I would, but the face mask they sent is a little on the small side, and not very comfortable. Also, you've got a hose to keep mindful of, and the belt/battery back can be a little bulky at times. As for its effectiveness, it does do the job very nicely, and the fresh cool air blowing in your face is nice. If I had a slightly bigger mask and a longer hose for it, I'd probably use it a lot more often.

TA-DAH!... Respirator!

My father-in-law was a firefighter/EMT, and said that the old timers claimed they used to shove their beards in their mouth as kind of a makeshift respirator back before SCBA and the like...
Can't imagine it was all that pleasant. haha

I just purchased one, waiting for its arrival. I plan on modding it to receive other filters

ALSO instead of the nose clamp Ill be using ear plug foamies.

I came across a powered respirator on Amazon for a decent price that might work after doing more research. I'll let you know what I think after I get it.

Love to see pics...

I know a breathe easy isn't in your budget, but keep an eye out on ebay man. I use it w/ the m105 mask and it's ridiculous how comfortable it is compared to the 3m half mask. My pump went down a few months ago and I went back to using the 3m half mask (with my beard lol). Well, it was so uncomfortable I just took it off and didn't use a mask for a few days. Crazy huh? Save up the $ as soon as you can =)

I bought a 3m versaflow setup for around $100 on the Bay. Bought a new filter for peace of mind for $89 organic/particle. Runs like new. If the battery packs cycle out there are rebuild services so you don't need to drop $350 on a new pack. Took a few weeks watching though to get that deal. Comfortable and works with beards, and I'll probably need glasses soon for close work due to my aging eyes and this will be perfect to wear glasses under.

Picked up a full set up breathe easy on the bay. Modifications will follow. I'll let you know what I end up doing.
