So, I'm respirator shopping, but not really sure what I'm looking for. Can somebody fill me in on where I can find a respirator mask that I can swap various cartridges onto? Also, what types of cartriges will I need, and which brands tend to be the easiest to find replacements for?

Thanks,

If you have a welding supply/allgas kind of store they have a good selection, plus if you do any welding they have the low profile ones to fit under the sheild.I picked one of these up on monday for those tight spaced welding jobs.( here's a hint if you have a beard/goatee your only kidding your self with an un-powered mask....and thats no jive  ) most places you buy them should do a fit test

A positive pressure powered mask or hood may be the smartest way to go.It will cost you more (possibly a lot more) at first, but is much better in the long run.If using a cartrige filter face mask, get a two cartrige unit.Use the pre filters on the cartriges.Use P100 filters. If grinding Micarta use filters rated for organic vapors.

For micarta, you'll need a rating for organic vapor AND Formaldehyde. Regular organic vapor cartridges will not protect you from formaldehyde gas, also given off by micarta.

The cotton dust pre filters with the adapters to hold them on over the cartridges are a must.

I use a 6000 series by 3-M company, but I don't sport facial hair. If you do, like was said above, you're just kidding yourself if you think a regular respirator will protect you.

3M makes one that is required for my college classes of paint and body work. It comes with replaceable filters and works with our paint booths fresh air system. It costs abut $20 but is well worth it. It is part number 7182 for the medium size.
