Responsible Camping

6 months maximum or $5,000 fine? seems like a pretty minor punishment...

what a couple of morons...

The brief article does not say if they reported the fire, which in its early stages might have helped get it under control.

Not convicted of anything... I'll hold on passing judgement.

As far as the law goes, if people died and it was an act of arson I'm fairly certain that's at least 2nd degree murder.

Years ago there were arsonists in California that were convicted of murder after a helicopter pilot collided with another aircraft (in the smoke) and his body landed in a guys back yard.

These things are certainly a shame. They need to go to prison IMHO. I see things every year while camping-although not that severe. I see people chopping down live trees for fires. I have seen people throwing hatchets/tomahawks/knives at live trees-then miss said tree-& have the hatchet/tomahawk/knife go right into the road where children were playing. Sad that people are that foolish/drunk/stupid. I have tried to talk to them, reason with them & also reported them. Seems like no one cares anymore. Very fustrating to me.

Bush fires are a serious, serious problem in Australia. The town I grew up in was wiped off the face of the earth in 2009 and killed 45 people.

Are there fire bans in Arizona in Summer when the threat of fire is highest?

I am going to play moron’s advocate though think these people were stupid and should be punished. Yes they made a mistake and yes it did a lot of damage but unless it was intentional it would be wrong to toss these fools in jail for the next 10 years. Now if they were arsonists I would put them in the darkest dank hole for a looooong time.

I have had to put out way too many abandoned camp fires left smoldering over the years.

Some people just don't belong in the woods.

Agree! Not that hard to act responsibly. May need some basic traing - how best to do that?

Well this is unrelated to this specific event but germane to the topic; it comes to mind there are varying degrees of being responsible or irresponsible in the wild - so does responsible camping also include not sticking knives, axes, tomahawks et al into live trees and/or using live trees as a knife/hawk throwing board? Just curious as I see pics on this forum frequently posted from members who do so just for blade photo ops and to nourish egos and bragging rights.

Doing so causes the trees to become highly prone to disease, it consumes extra resources to repair which stunts growth plus it scars/defaces pubic property/nature often permanently for life. Also how about those of us who go into area, build rock fire rings permanently blackening the rocks and leaving them behind when we done only to become a garbage recepticle for others later on? Or how about making fire rings, camp tables, chairs et al and then leaving them without reclaiming back to their natural or original condition when we're done. Being responsible seems to me should be "a we go into an area, use it and then leave it equal too or in better condition than we left"…and no one knows we’ve ever been there. But perhaps I'm seriously off-course here and in a minority.

I'm really surprised how frequently I find highly trained forum members displaying pics of their blades stuck in live trees for no other purpose other than just for ego/photo opportunities or turning a pristine public wilderness area into their customized campground making it a challenge or impossible to reclaim the land back to equal or better than it was condition.

Whatever happened to going into the wild and no one ever knew you were there? But what the heck to I know?
