Lost in most of the news coverage the past couple of days was the passing of author Robert B. Parker -- best known for the Spenser and Jesse Stone series of books -- at his home in Cambridge. He was 77.

Parker was the author of more than 50 books, spanning everything from detective fiction to poetry and the now popular category of young adult, and wrote at the extraordinary pace of 10 pages a day. His disdain for rewrites and outlines is the stuff of legends. Somewhat appropriately, he reportedly passed while writing at his desk.

Every book he wrote was dedicated to his wife, Joan.

He was one of my favorite authors. Rest in peace, sir.

Aw, Christ, I'm sad. I haven't read much of his newer work, but his 70's-80's work was top notch. Block, Leonard, Burke....... all my favorites are getting up there in years.

Atleast Crais is pretty young.

I'm very very sorry to hear that!

He was one of my favorite authors, and I've read every Spencer and Jessie Stone novel he's ever written. I'm going to miss him greatly. He was right up there with Donald Hamilton.

And he's got a new one out called The First Rule, another Joe Pike story.

Has been one of my all time favorites forever. I just finished listening to his last book on tape in my truck. Did not like Susan Silverman.

I was hoping that he was going to do some more "early" Spenser novels (he had started a young adult series but haven't read any). I would have loved to read about Spenser as a cop and just starting out.

Oh yeah, and Avery Brooks was perfect as Hawk in the TV show. Parker once said the only thing he liked about the show was the residuals.

Parker and James Lee Burke, my favorites; like some of the others mentioned; will really miss Parker!

read almost all his work...it's gonna suck bigtime that we won't be reading continuing adventures of some of his newest characters (sunny randall, hitch, and jesse stone)...

Parker was a crusty sumbitch, I met him at a Tower Books signing right when I got out of the Navy back in 1991. All he cared about was how many books I was buying, which was a lot.

Have every one of the Spenser novels, and more than 1/2 in hardbound.

Will raise a beer to his memory, he was, for sure, one of a kind.

Best Regards,

I like his books, and am sorry that there will not be any more.

IIRC, he messed up a bit on some of the "gun stuff" in his novels. I know, it's nitpicking, but I purely hate it when a character in a novel uses the safety on his/her revolver.

Small problems with good novels.
