Last week received a whatsapp message from an old customer with a damaged knife I made years ago.
It's the first time I see such a damage. Long story short, he told me his father in law tried to sharpen it with a grinder and... things happened...

I proposed a solution, quoted my work and off I went, I'm happy with the result.

Great work man! I hope the father-in-law still has all of his fingers...

I'm curious as to how any kind of grinder could take a chunk like glass out of the steel

He probably tried to sharpen edge up on a bench grinder and it snagged. Hope he's ok. Nice job on the resto!

Nice job! Poo poo does indeed happen. Similar happened to me while I was doing the finish grinding on a Santuko, if I remember correctly I was at 220 grit and on a belt grinder.

Flaw in the steel perhaps? Quien sabe? I had a similar answer. First since this was an order, I cut out a new one and winged it off to JT and then:

Sent these two off to the customer and told him the Santuko would be in route as soon as it was finished. He was delighted with three for the price of two:

Got the Santuko blade back from JT and I saved a set of scales from that same block of wood:

This one looks like it started on the handle side and propagated towards the tip, since its perpendicular it probably was a deeper grind line or fracture during hardening. You did great on the repair!!

JT was wondering if maybe the clay was uneven too? Who knows. Thanks.

Looks like the clay coat job I did on them turned out good.

How did you get scales off without ruining them, impressive. What glue was used? This is a great restore.
