I've been searching through older posts trying to see how you guys restore axe and hatchet heads. I see that some of you like to use wire brush wheels on angle grinders I looked for some wire wheels and there are different kinds like crimped, twisted, knotted, etc. What is the best kind to use? Should I get a brass brush or steel?

Could you guys post some pictures of the tools you use to do the cleaning and restoration? That would be very helpful. Thanks.

Brass brush. I personally don't use knotted or twisted. I use a double bench grinder with wire brush on one wheel and fine stone on the other. I also use a flap disk on side grinder quite a lot. Then for finishing a sanding block with various grits upto 1000. Can of nevr Dull, WD40 are never far away either. Sounds line your on your way! Welcome to the addiction.

For rust rermoval I prefer a brass cup brush on an angle grinder. For really heavy rust I'll use a knotted steel brush. I never use a crimped steel cup because they throw wires. Always wear eye, ear and respiratory protection while removing rust with a grinder.

I use a steel wire wheel on a bench grinder or steel cup brush on an angle grinder. I sometimes just need 000 or 0000 steel wool rubbed by hand. I hate to see an axe head with light surface rust and original paint subjected to unnecessary harsh methods.
