Restored head tempering

I have recently cleaned up and restored an old east wing hatchet. I used rust remover, grinding wheels, and sand paper. I think the edge is too soft, how can I temper it? Can it be done at this point?

The short answer is, not without wrecking the handle. At the factory, all the heat treating is done before the handle is installed.

Did it go through a fire or other heat event that changed the original hardness? Can you use it as is?

I believe that it got too hot during the grinding process. Would that cause it to soften?

Why do you think the edge is too soft?
Tempering reduces the hardness at the end of a heat treatment cycle.
Excessive heat causes heat treated steel to soften.
Did you burn the edges when grinding, what colors did the steel turn?

The first thing I’d try would be to hand file the edge back.

Yah, grinding needs slow speed or a light touch, or both. Well, I’d use it some and see how it performs. If the edge bends or rolls, your best bet is probly to remove the affected steel til you get back to the unaffected part (without overly heating it this time).
