Howdy.

I picked up these two Schade Scrimshaws from the estate of an old grease monkey who kept them in his shop and didn’t show ‘em much love.

I need some tips on restoring (as much as possible). Removing the rust and cleaning the scrimshaw without screwing it up.

Thanks!

Ok, don’t see a way to upload pics, so just envision two Schrades with grease smudges on the scrimshaw and some rust on the blades.

Posting pics is going to help with participation.

An easy way to upload pics is through a photo-hosting site like imgur.com. Doesn't cost anything - just create an account there and then upload your photos to their site. For every photo you upload to their site, they'll automatically generate a coded link that you can simply copy & paste into your posts here. Specifically, 'BBCODE' is the one you want to use. I linked a thread from the Tech Support area, detailing different ways to post photos here.

Ok, let’s try this

Without doing a literal ton of work, or spending a lot of money, I would say scrub the blades with 0000 steel wool and put some paste (or car) wax on the handles and call it done.

^^What he said. Those don’t look too bad really, I was expecting worse.

How do you want them to look when done. Some of that oxidation on the blade will probably not come off with steel wool, and WD 40 but thats how I would start. The side plates I would be careful with cause of the scrimshaw work. The stain on the one on the left may come up with some denatured alcohol and a q-tip, or maybe soap and water if it is just grease from his hands. If it does, then clean them up as other have mentioned. The tip on the one on the left looks to be broken off so you may want to address that.

Scrub the handles with a thick paste of baking soda, dish detergent, and a tiny bit of water. Scrub it in with your thumbs and then rinse.
