Restoring Knife Tip?

Any suggestions on putting a needle nose point back on my knives. I have a Lansky universal kit and it's not doing the job, still to rounded. Should I use some needle files to profile a new tip? I've been thinking about getting a Wal Mart Chi Com cheapo blade and destroying that to practice on. What do you guys do to get that needle tip? Thanks

I grind the spine down to recreate a point, sharpening to raise the edge up into the spine takes a whole lot of work.

Assuming you are talking about grinding a point back on which has been rounded through sharpening, a stone will do fine. What you have to be careful about is running then stone non-perpendicular to the tip, this is what causes the rounding. Carefully use the stone cut right into the edge to restore the correct point shape and then sharpen it as normal to recreate the edge.

Just do verify, do you mean basically drag the edge (dulling it in the reshaping process) across the stone at 90 degrees until you've "re-pointed" the tip, and then re-sharpen the dulled area of the edge to its former glory once the tip is correctly shaped? I was able to fix up a SAK missing about 1/4inch of the tip by holding the blade perpedicular to the stone and draging it side to side while raising the handle until it had a nice pointed tip - and then re-sharpening the area near the tip that had been dulled.

Exactly.

It's a Schrade, my camera sucks at close up detail. It's sounds like my Lansky kit is ill equipped for this task. Where can I get some good stones online?
