Restoring knives after a house fire?

Ok guys.. A year ago today our house burnt to the ground. While literally sifting through the ashes in the following days, we quickly became overwhelmed with the continual smell of house fire and eventually stopped trying to find things and just threw what remained into bins and into a storage unit..

Well today, while not really planned, the wife and I rode out the storage unit and brought many of the totes we saved home..

Anyway, several knives "survived." Including a Case my dad gave me when I was just a kid..

I'd like to attempt to get it back to usable shape..

What would you guys suggest?

Very sorry to hear about your house fire. The first thing I would suggest is posting this in the Traditionals sub-forum, there are several good folks over there who are well versed in knife reclamation projects. That is the best advice I can give you. You can ask a mod to move it for you.

Sorry 'bout the fire. Mods will move it for you. Probably polish the blades on a dremel/belt sander. I don't know about the handles.

I would give Case a call and see if they can clean that up for you. There would be a charge, but I don't think it would be excessive.

if the photo depicts its current after fire conditions I would say it is in usable condition. If it was not exposed to heat capable of melting the handle material I'd say you are good to go.

That knife looks fine, just clean up the rust, sharpen and oil it; Good to go!
Sorry about the firs, hope things are improving.

It was in my night stand, which only sustained smoke/steam/water damage.

It is useable now. I'd just like to clean it up.

Bupfish! Sorry to hear bout your house man! I know the feeling! Life changing event for sure. Mine burned to the ground too but after sifting through a room I found it was a futile effort. In fact when I got to my shop I just told the metal recyclers to scrape it off and recycle everything ( I did keep my anvil:D). You are very lucky to have that knife in working condition. Id save that sucker for the rest of my life! I wasnt so lucky. Here is a very small fraction of what I got. Some of my biggest knives I couldnt even find. Never figured that out?

Good luck man! Hope you find something else. Was a good idea to pack the ashes away for later. I would wipe it clean with some fine 4x0 steel wool and buff the scales out and that should do it! Great find! Congrats!

It's amazing what we found.. My wife found her engagement ring and my wedding band, her wedding band we never found..

Fortunately our bedroom was the last place the fire reached and it only got halfway in, before the fire department made it.

It's really crazy how it'll change your life..
