Restoring Magic Stone Finish?

There was this line of rust on the front of the blade... After a while I finally couldn't take it anymore and removed it with some sand paper... :o

Now there is a 1 x 2.5 inch spot that just stands out..

Is there anyway to restore my khuk to its former sexayness?

Emery cloths? Is there something I can buy to polish the blade or do I have to send it to an expert?

Thanks!

what grit paper did you use?

Just select the next highest grit and keep going over the same spot. Start with a strong/heavy stroke. As it gets smoother/easier, move up a level in grit. 220, 320, 400, 600, 1200, 2000.

After you have gone all the way to 2000, get some Flitz Metal Polish and rub it by hand until the shine returns.

This may seem like a lot to do, but if you do it while watching a movie, the time flies.

If you need help finding any of the stuff mentioned above, let me know.

I dunno I just grabbed a piece of sand paper and rubbed away! :footinmou

It says 80 A on the back. :barf:

Where can I get all those sand paper types as a complete set and that metal polish?

Many thanks!

if tha'ts 80 grit ya started jsut a bit rough there. I generally buy up through 600 grit from Home Depot or Ace, and then 800-2000 from Pep Boys over in the auto body section. Most of the auto body stuff is the half(or third, can't remember) smaller sheets, and up through 600 I like to get the full ones if possible, as I get mnore use then(four pieces to a sheet, rather than two)

Here are just a few sources to try - all on the internet:

www.knifemaking.com
www.texasknife.com
www.popsknifesupplies.com
www.supergrit.com
www.kovalknives.com
www.knifeandgun.com
www.harborfreight.com
www.trugrit.com
www.leevalley.com

Some sell in bulk, others a sheet at a time. Best to wander around a bit and try to find what you like.

You can get anywhere from 24 grit to 9000x.

Flitz metal polish is also available at nearly all of the above links.

Now, if those sources are too much investment, you can just wander into Home Depot or Lowe's and pick up a mixed package of Wet/Dry sandpaper in the Paint Dept. That will have 220, 400 and 600.

They say you can get 1000 and above at autobody shops, but I've never found any, so I ordered mine online.

I don't know any stores that carry Flitz - only online.

Think of it this way = whatever quantity you buy now - you will surely use it eventually!

Personally, I now buy only 3M sheets in the higher grits because they load less and last longer. About 5 or 6 times longer. I used to go through that Wet/Dry paper like there was no tomorrow...

Best-O-Luck!

If I picked up a rock, would that be considered 1 grit? I guess it would have to be 1" x 1" If so, would a 2" square rock be 0.5 grit?

What does this have to do with khukuries? Everything. :p

I need a day off.

2*2=4
1/4=.25
I think

;) :p

Bruise you crack me up.

Bruise,

Interesting proposition but I think your rock would only achieve a magic stone finish if it fit this formula:

1 + 1 = 3

Bruise, pick up 2 pieces of hardstone and rub them back and forth against each other until you get a flat surface. Now you have 2 sharpening stones.

You have lost a lot of time though.:p

I'm not touching this one with a 3.6 ( give or take ) meter pole.

Your standard PepBoys/Oreilly's/AUtozone/etc should have grits up to 2000 in the paint/body section. I buy mine from Pep Boys, it's over by the spray paint(across the aisle) around the bondo

My local Ace hardware store sells wet-dry paper: 80, 120, 220, 320, 400, 600, 1500 grit,
Flitz (usually Simichrome too), Min-Wax tung oil, and of course, 0000 steel wool. About everything needed for khuks except decent whetstones or other sharpening stuff.
