I was just wondering why there is not a forum on the topic of restoring old knives. Guys could post before and after pictures and describe the tools and techniques used in restoring the knife. If anyone knows of any online resources for knife restoration information, I would appreciate the link. Seems like there is tons of info on new knives, but little info on how to clean up some of the old war horses you find at flea markets ect... Any help would be appreciated! Also, several people often talk of reprofiling a knife's edge or changing the shape of the blade. If there was a website or page that discussed how this process is done, that would be helpfull as well. Thanks again.

Good idea.
I have a friend that brought me a knife yesterday. It had been his Grandfather's knife. He thought he lost it, but found it by the pump. It wintered out there and is in pretty tough shape. I have it in a WD40 bath right now. We'll see how it goes. Any tips would be helpful.

You could always post on the ShopTalk forum.

Probably because cleaning up an old war knife would literally destroy its value by 80%!

If you are a antique collector, there are forums/places to go to get good advice about restoring antiques - I should know, I've restored many pieces of antique furniture.

If you just happened to find an dingy old knife and wanted to clean it up, go to the ShopTalk Forum.

I had an old cleaver that I had Bruce Bump clean up, polish and sharpen for me. He was very knowledgable and did his best to preserve the rare hand-forged blade's patina.

sure, I have..nothing worth anything though, I just can't stand to see rusted shut blades. I've done a couple of old timers, and an old barlow, but just enough to remove the rust, and make them useable again. metal brush(looks like a toothbrush) never dull, and wd-40 work wonders!
