I have a question regarding this. I have a few knives that are pretty bad in shape, so im planning on restoring them. How do I drive the pins out? Ive tried with a punch but i cant get it... This book i have says to stick a thin blade in-between the knife blade and the liner and lightly hammer it through the pin. It isnt working for me. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Reid

Reid, a very thin blade works best, wear eye protection!! Best to do it with the blade or blades closed, and you'll most likely have to do it to both sides of the blade due to pin spread. You'll need to whack it pretty hard, lightly tapping it will get you nowhere and likely dent your blade before it gets a chance to cut through the pin. A punch definitely won't work. If you'd like I can snap a few pics of the process on Monday.

I used a utility knife blade clamped into the jaws of my vise and then tapped the knife down onto the blade with it protected by some leather.

It seemed to work well.

Awesome! I tried to use a razor blade like that, but i was bending the liner too much. Should i grind the blade thinner? Thanks!

It worked! Now what do i do when i cant punch out the pins holding the handle slabs and the backsprings, and the liners together?

Holy cow, I tried this with an old Colonial I had lying around that I wanted to rebuild. I tried this method (boy I was scared!) and it works!!
Thans OP and SWONUT.

awesome, I've been playing with the idea of taking another one apart, this should make it much easier on the knife :)
