A few months ago, I took my first shot at making some custom G10 handle scales for myself to go on my RAT 1. They're nothing special, but I think they came out well for my first time doing something like this.

Those look great JS, nice job. Looks like a great grip and grind on it. I have seen some videos on doing that, and have thought about trying it myself. Did you file those by hand, or use a dremil type tool on them?

I used a dremil on them. Might come out better if I do the next set by hand the next time. Slower is likely better til I get the hang of it better.

lookin' good ! I am in the middle of rescaling my rat 1 . I guess I should get off the computer and finish it up:D Thanks for the post.

I am having a hell of a time getting the blade on my rat to center in the handle. Did you have any difficulty getting your to center? Do you have any advice you could pass my way?

I am waiting on my g10 blanks to try this for the first time. Spyderco tenacious. I am worried/curious about this blade centering part of it. Any videos or advice about dealing with this aspect of customization is greatly appreciated.

Shkd64,

I made wood scales for my Tenacious. Here's a couple of things that I remembered about the mod:

The screws are metric. The screws for the spacer were very difficult to remove. I ended up replacing them.

Don't lose the stop pin.

Make sure your liners are flat.

My Tenacious has two different sizes washers on the pivot. Make note of which side they are on.

Since I was using wood, it was easy to make thicker scales. This permitted me to contour the handle (palm swell), it really made the knife more comfortable in hand. Having the thicker handle makes it easier to open one handed.

The wood scales changed the click sound when it is opened, it sounded louder and hollow. The wood probably reflects and resonates the sound differently. Not a big deal.

I had a few issues getting the blade centered again on mine. It just took a lot of adjusting on the pivot to make sure they were tightened correctly. I finally ran them both up (very gently) and tightened each side very slowly a little at a time.
