Some history. I was given this kinfe in the late 1970's by a little old lady who was a teacher in Long Beach. She had taken from a student who brought it to school. She couldnt rember the year. but when she retired she brought it home and had been using it in her garden for years. When I got it it had a cracked ice celoiud handle. the blabe was black with rust. I just cleaned it up a bit and put it on display the blsde wasnt much to look at but the handle was nice. fast forward to a few years ago the handle self distructed in the display case. chunks were falling out an rust showed up onder the handle. To save the blade I removed the handle and put the knife in storage. After several yaers of searching foe a crackec ice handle to replace the orginal I gave up. This week (after some research) I built my first stacked laether handle and polished the blade. Does anyone know a model number, name or possable age of this kinfe?

Can't answer your questions, sorry, just wanted to chime in and say beautiful work!

badws6,

need to know some info;
1) What is length of knife? has it been changed during refinish?
2) What is blade length? has it been changed during refinish?
3) Has blade shape been changed during refinishing?
4) What was the color of the cracked ice celluloid?

If you can give me the above info, I can give you particulars on the knife.

I think the handle may have lost .25 of an inch

Thanks

Bob, you did a great job repairing and refinishing that knife. Is it going to be a safe queen or a user? IMO the blade would look great with a natural patina on it like what you get from cutting food. Either way, good job and nice knife!!

badws6,

You originally had an E98. A 98 pattern with fancy celluloid handles. It was produced in the 1930s.
Your mods have changed it to a 598. :)
Nice job.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Sir. I hated to loose the celluiod handles ...but once they started breaking down there was no choice. The info is greatly appreaciated.

badws6,

You're welcome. I believe you did the correct thing. Once celluloid goes, nothing goods comes from it. At least now, you have a good user for many years to come.

apparently i'm glad i never collected celluloid pens :)

quite pretty though, those originals, and a very nice repair job

Wow..!!! What a great restore on that knife. You know, KABAR has been a long respected knife/tool in the USA, and it is great to see an old fella like that so lovingly restored.

What a great job, and what a nice knife. Using that knife now would just add to its history. Nicely done.

Absolutely marvelous work, brother.
