Hey all, so I'm looking into a custom sheath for a custom knife, but I'm hung up on Kydex vs. Leather. I like the "tactical" or "stealthy" look to Kydex, but drawing and sheathing the knife can be loud when you hit that click that actually retains the knife in the sheath. On the other hand, black leather would be great, but I see mostly straps with snaps, which aren't really what I'm going for either. Do any of you know any other retention methods with leather sheaths that don't involve snaps?

The shape and design of the knife dictates everything .
Can you post a pic of the knife , or one with a similar shape ?

Check out the Sissi Puukko by J-P Peltonen, M-95/M-07. He has what looks like a Rubber Pulley, inside the mouth of the sheath. When you push the knife into the sheath, the bottom part of the handle (shaped like a guard) pushes the two sides of the pulley out allowing the knife to be fully inserted into the sheath. Once in the sheath the two sides of the pulley close, now rest against the back of the guard, providing very good retention. To access the knife, you rest your thumb on the top side of the sheath, wrap your fingers around the handle and push against the sheath with your thumb, while pulling up on the handle. Harder and longer to describe than to do. Very little noise as it is rubber against the handle, and easy to access and re-sheath the knife. John

That shape screams for a pouch style sheath. Look through the how to stickies, there are some beautiful example on this forum. A well built one will retain in any reasonable situation (up through combat), but still allow for a quick and safe draw. rtmind/randy

If handle scale comes over the finger guard as in the knife in the link, then leather sheath can be molded to retain the handle almost like kydex would.
