I was just wondering on how you would know when it is time to retire a knife? I like my current knifes but I just need to know when to retire it .

When the blade is as wide as it is thick

Fixed blade: when it's no longer usable due to breakage or sharpening has reduced your large Bowie knife to a paring knife, for example.

Folders: when the lock mechanism wears out and it's no longer safe, and/or you've sharpened it down to a stub.

The other time people "retire" knives is when they find something better in that category and no longer carry the old one. This is FAR more common than the above.

That and losing one...

How do I know when it's time to retire a knife? That's easy. I just look at it, and if it appears to have a partially serrated blade I retire it immediately.

Ouch!

You don't have to retire it. Just put it on "limited/easy duty" When you feel nostalgic, bring out the old soldier for a day or two.
