retired from production

Is it just me or does it seem like Sog is discontinuing alot of their fixed blades like the bowie models. What the heck is up with that? The web sight says retired from production on several of their bowie models and leather sheaths for them. Is Sog making the same mistake other companies have been making by discontinuing the very knives that are not only still fan favorites but also put them on the map as a very good company? Unless I missed something their won't be anything left as far as bowies go to order.

Hmmm... things like this have come up before. It does in fact seem that the SOG "classics" are indeed finished. I think it might have to do with the shift in production. I, for one, would love to have the original SK5 Tigershark and Tomcat. Someday... someday!

Wow, great catch.

I did a quick check and the following are listed as retired:

bowie 2
super bowie
tech bowie
seal team elite
trident 2

Very sad. These are the knives that IMHO still gave SOG credibility.

Sigh. I hope this means better knives down the pipe. If not, I'll have to pick up my favorites and move on.

I checked again.

Actually, ALL of the fixed blades other than the Agency and Creed are listed as "retired".

So are alot of the folders and seems the entire fusion line. Seems there will be big changes in the 2010 catalog.

Fingers crossed and hoping this means better things on the way.

I went through each fixed blade on the website and here's what I came up with as retired:

Field Pup
Pentagon
Pentagon mini
Pentagon mini tigerstripe
All Seal Pups (6)
Seal Team
Seal Team Elite
Sog Bowie
Super Bowie
Team Leader TL-01
Team Leader Survivor
Tech Bowie's (all 3)
Tigersharks (2)
Trident

That's 22 knives. I can't believe they are dropping the Seal Pup and Team models. Those seemed pretty popular and great fixed blades to boot! I'm glad I got my Team Leader 20CV before now. Curious to hear what SOG has to say about it.

Wow, those classics are what made me attracted to SOG in the first place. I hope they replace them with something as unique and able to blend tactical with classical.

Look forward to hearing from SOG about this.

Could this just be a mistake? Some of these knives aren't very old. What's going on here, Chris?

I would like to give an opinion and ask a few questions.

For many years I have read threads concerning knives that were made and now have been discontinued.

Let me ask a couple questions just for fun to those who are wondering why these have been discontinued and also before someone says I don't know for sure you are right..........I am only giving my opinion and guessing.

If you owned a major company and made a specific model of something and this something was not selling as well as you and others think it should would you decide to continue making it if it is not making the $ you think it should or would you continue to make it for several more years just because it was a very well liked item for those who owned them ?

They are all great knives and well liked but simply may not have been selling as well as the company thought it should.

So they must move on to the next item and hope it does better.

Robbie Roberson. :)

I have been looking at the SOG tech bowie for a few weeks, I was looking at the specs again on friday and saw the taken out of production notice and I bought it immediately. :) That being said I am also worried about the massive amount of knives down for the count. We can only hope that they come out with better knives to replace them. In the meantime be on the lookout for surplus models of what you want, but prices might really go up. If anyone if from SOG I think we would all love to know what the hell is going on.

Robbie,
As a business model it does make good sense to drop non-sellers. The concern there is that it appears most of the fixed blades that many of us were partial to in the SOG line-up (and what attracted many of us to SOG in the first place) are gone.
If so, much of SOG's identity and appeal goes with them.

Snipes,
"...better knives to replace them..." would certainly be the hope, but with a perceived general trend to lesser steels and lower prices (and not just with SOG), that may be a forlorn hope.

Chris,
Can you address any of this?

Denis

dunno 'bout you guys, but when i read about the new POHL FORCE Alpha folder... i was kinda hoping that the design crew at sog knives had taken a good hard look at it's faceted SOG blade for possible future SOG folding Knife directions!

And I went through Folder-section, men this is terrible:

Arcitech
Arcitech CF
Blink
Flash - ALL
Kilowatt
Meridian - Topo - ALL
Pentagon Elite I & II
Spec-Elite I & II
Twitch - ALL
Vision
Visionary I & II
X-Ray Vision
X-Ray Vision Mini

what's going on?:confused::confused::confused:

This was a mistake with our store back end. None of these models are discontinued. They should be fixed now.

Chris

Hi Chris,

What about the fixed blades? They are all still listed as discontinued.

Thanks.

Whew! Now I'm one who prefers the old Seki models, but there are still a few of the current models I'd like to try out. This gives me time to save my $.

They should all be okay now. I just checked all the fixed blades and they are available. You might need to refresh the page.
