I ordered this knife Thursday from Cumberland Knives and it came in today. This makes number 3 for me of this particular knife, and the first two have been gone for over a year or more. I had sorta let this knife drift off my radar until I read a recent post about the Retribution II. I had this one ordered about 5 minutes after I finished that thread! I know Bill @ CK had been out for a while but know has plenty he said. I do have a question and a few comments, so comments first. The other two I had were taken apart, just as this was, cleaned, lube applied, and back together. The problem occured when I tightened up the pivot to where I like it to be, as this caused the blade to go out of center and no trick I tried would realign the blade except to loosen the pivot again. So I was pleasantly surprised when I reassembled this one a the blade stayed peerfectly centerd! Another thing I noticed was that the lock was not very stiff and a light push would move it over. So as in the others, I put more bend in the lock so that it is now nicely stiff and will not unlock until I make a decision to do so. On my others I sanded the micarta handles down to where they were flat and added a pocket clip through the laynard hole. So far I haven't done that to this one...yet! I am thinking about just having a set of flat grips made for it and then go from there. I do think these are discontinued though, anyone know for sure?

I am curious about one thing. It seems my other two had liners that were .125" thick, but these are .100" thick. Not that it is a problem because that is still plenty thick on the .200" thick blade! I will also say that this one has the best blade grinds of the 3. They are evenly ground with a nice high grind. Still a Tom Krein reedge would probably be sweet on the 4.5" blade this mega folder has.

I revived this thread from the depths of pg.28 as I wanted to add some info on what I have done since receiving this knife.

Sanded the grips down as described in post 1, so that they are flat on the end with only a slight rise in the middle. They feel really good in my hand even though they have been thinned. I added a thumb groove on the left scale so that my thumb makes solid contact with the blade hole, making it easier to open, and also allowing me to get the tight pivot I want. My final step was adding a pocket clip for tip up carry. This clip was placed at the very rear of the handle, set up for right hand carry. I used an old clip I had laying around from a cheapie knuife, but the clip was the nicest part of that knife. It is a folover clip so I got a very deep carry for the Retribution 1 with only 1/4" showing out of the pocket. I also shortened the clip to 1.75" in length and then reshaped and rebent to get a good solid fit to the handle.

In the last two Retributions I had used the laynard hole with a nut and bolt arrangement to hold on the clip. This time arround I used two 4-40 screws and drilled holes through the micarta, tapped them, then used some JB Weld steel epoxy in the holes when I mounted the clip. The micarta where I placed the clip is 3/16" thick so the clip screwed on and is extremely tight, especially with the steel epoxy on the inside of both holes. As a last thing I put a laynard through one handle only as the clip covered the hole on the right scale.

Now to the fun part! The knife carries very well for a heavy, 10+ ounces, long, 6" closed length, and thick.5/8",knife. I found the comfortable fit jeans I wear allow the knife to ride most easily with no printing of the knife in pocket. The clip has stayed tight witout any wiggle and I think in addition to what I mentioned above, the larger screws I used work much better, 4-40 vs 2-56, these screws also use a t8 instead of a t6 torx.

Of course I only carry this knife when I am off work and the weekends and it is fun to carry! Nothing like hearing a 4.75" X .200" blade open and lock up to bring a big smile to my face!!!

Also want to mention the excellent edge grinds this knife came with and how easy my Sharpmaker put a nice chest hair popping edge on the entire length of the blade. I really like the N690Co steel and also have two Bokers with it that do an excellent job.

So there you have it. The story of my modified Retribution 1.

Anyone else done anything similar?
