H'day all...

After two days of aggrivation working at the Army Hospital..... I took half of the day off today to redo some of my website.... It is bad when my site got just as disorganized as my shop is....

I had to do something about it.... LOL.... If anyone is familiar with my site before I made changes I would like your input......

I use yahoo sitebuilder and it is EASY!!!!! I still don't know what a html is....
and don't care too......

Thanks,

Daniel Prentice

thanks.... it was getting pretty cluttered and messy.... I just kept adding and never situated things.... kinda like my shop.... first day I had taken off to do anything besides hospital and the shop........ I was watching my boots to see if they would move from the corner of the room... had a gun handy just in case.......

Hi Daniel! Your site looks really great! I liked your last one though too, but it was a little busy. I use Yahoo Sitebuilder too. One thing I saw that I didn't like (something that I did on mine also at first) is that when you click on a knife image (on a main page) it opens up the image in the same browser. Instead of hitting the back button, it is easy to X out of the picture and you accidentally X out of your site (completely). If you want to change this go to your Sitebuilder and right click on the image and select properties, in the general tab select Target Window (on the bottom of the box) and click on "A new browser window". Click OK and you will no longer run into that problem! Unfortunately, you will have to do this to all images you want to open in a separate window and any future images you add to your site. Just a suggestion, I just didn't like accidentally X-ing out of the site completely and then having to go back and find the site again. Everything else looks GREAT!!! Disclaimer: :D I keep saying, "I", "me", when it actually should be saying "my wife", "my spouse", "my webmaster" :) because she's the one doing my website! I'm pounding the steel :) !

That is what I needed to hear David...........

I didn't think about the properties of the pictures..... makes alot of sense and is easier..... Do you have anymore tips??????? This is why I posted up here...........

Thanks

Daniel Prentice

site looks good, i have onley one comment. and that is to slim the page down so its not so wide, this will help because you dont have to scrol left and right to see the page. as a rule of thumb i do most pages at 800 x 600 so that even small monitors can view the complete page. I do webpage design and programing so if you need any help i would be more then willing to help out. O and HTTP stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol"

The website is alot better. Something you may try, strictly from an asthetic point of you. Its easier on the eyes to have a light background with a darker text. My two cents. I look at your page alot to browse through the knives. They are NICE!

thanks Steve... I will consider the background change.....

JT, thanks for the info on what http stands for..... I had the pages too wide before.... actually much wider and shortened them just a few days ago..... but definately am going to experiment....

Thanks Howard.... just sent you an email

Please don't take offense. :) There a few things on your site that really annoy me.

I'm sure you're quite proud of your family crest, and there's no reason not to display it... perhaps on either side of your header. Having it tiled all the way down both sides of every page is just ugly. Some would even say it's conceited.

About Me is underlined... why? Usually this denotes a link to a dedicated page. Don't confuzzle the surfers. Also, multiple exclamation points, or overusing them in general, looks amatuerish and cheesy. Same for MESSAGES IN ALL CAPS, like your wait-list notice. Think of a used car ad... "EVERYTHING'S on SALE!!! WE MUST BE CRAZY!!!" Blech...

Keep in mind that all those little animations throughout the site will make it load slower for most viewers. Personally, I'm not a big fan of these either, just because they look like generic clip-art. You're showcasing YOUR creativity and skills... why use generic art? Especially when it has nothing to do with the knives themselves.

DW has a good point about dark backgrounds... the thing to remember here is contrast. The white on dark blue looks fine, easy to read... the royal blue on dark blue isn't so good. Use yellow, like where it says you do sell billets. The green text on other parts shopws up well, too. For cryin out loud, don't use purple text on a black background, or yellow on white! The font and size you're using is good, nice and clear.

Video page: The first 3, and the last one all open the same heat-treat vid sample in Mozilla Firefox. Some don't open at all. Oops! In IE more of them open but the cable damascus one opens and starts two players simultaneously. Until this is fixed, I would only publish the heat-treat, grinding, and forging a clip-point vid samples, with a note that more are on the way. Better to give 3 nice samples and promise more, than to waste time with dead/incorrect links. Maybe JTknives can tell you why some of the samples don't open right in Mozilla ?

The available, gallery and shop pages all look pretty good, although not all the pictures link to a larger version. That's not a real big deal, it looks like you put up big pics of the ones that show closer detail, etc.

Everything works fine on your links page, but I question why the last one is there... when shopping for a knife, why would I want to be linked to an airsoft search engine?

The only other suggestions I have would be to put the buttons on the homepage in different order... such as available > gallery > videos > shop > about me > whips.
I'd put whips at the end because it's totally removed from everything else on the site.

Other little things have already been mentioned above.

Hope this doesn't sound too negative, but you asked :D I know from experience it's a big pain to check every link, grammar and spelling etc... but once you have it down it will be a lot better, and will look more professional. These days anyone with a library card can start a website; avoid the common cheesy mistakes and yours will stand out.

Thanks very much Gibsonfan.... I am always in need of honesty and I totally respect that and you have gained instant respect from me.

One problem I have had is time do follow up and change the site and from who's point of view and that is why I am asking... I definately learned from you and the others that have posted.

I will use your post to make some corrections. Right now my time is very limited..... btw....the airsoft guy sales things for soldiers and that is why I have it up there since I am one myself.

If I didn't want help with the site I would be offended, but I am very fortunate that your comments are truthful and honest and that is how I will learn and improve.....

Thanks again all and keep giving me feedback.

Daniel

I was thinking about the term conceited..... I think that is very disrespectful word..... my family has died, fought, volunteered, and served to make this country what it is. my relatives are carved in front of the Alamo and so on through the years to me serving as a Commissioned Officer in the US Army..... Conceited.... YES, and Proud to serve and protect what you and I and everyone else has the right to... a freedom to speak, choose, and so on.....

We fight so others don't or can't, so I am proud to be conceited as a Soldier and as an American and from a family of those before me that has sacrificed.

Airborne!!!!!!!!!
All The Way!!!!!!
