No, I'm not going to start thumping Bibles

I've been reading the posts both to and from Paul Bos and others regarding the general community of knife makers (old and new) and have come to another startling revelation...every time a question with meaning and relevance to the efforts of putting together a knife, sheathes, heat treating, material, etc., the answers usually come with a variety of possible solutions (most valuable and some even brilliant) without regard of time, money or investment.

I have wondered (after cleaning and polishing, sharpening and buffing about 100 knives in the last 2 weeks) how anyone can ever make any money at this game. Then I see the posts on this page and realize that the money isn't why people make knives (it may come to some and never to others)...it's for the quest of learning and discovery. For every challenge placed in front of a new knife maker, chances are that someone has already conquered the same challenge and learned from it and thanks to this forum we (the Newbie FNG's) can increase the learning curve and proceed with further challenges. I don't think that I'm ever going to 'profit' from making knives financially but I have reapped the rewards of a unique brotherhood by accepting the challenges of blades and their making.

I'm going to go throw up now...so much schmaltz in a single dose can only lead to more turning perfectly good steel into dust

You're absolutely right. A lot of us don't get into knifemaking to make a living. I took it up as a form of stress relief. 60 hrs. a week running a pawn shop can really get you down, but hiding in the knife shop and grinding hot steel brings me right back up. Plus I get to sell a few knives and give some to friends as gifts.

I agree. I am a Newbie FNG and I know I won't be making any money off of it in the near future! I do it because it is fun, a good challenge and a way to kick back after a long boring day at work where there is nothing to do. I think it is really fun to take a bar of steel and create something out of it that is useful and to try grinding different shapes.
