Hey guys my sisters turning 18 and she wants a knife, she likes my dodos blade shape but wants a longer blade. i cant really find many, give me some suggestions. she will be using it for utility.

thanks guys!

I don't know if there are any reverse-S knives that Spyderco makes, other than the Dodo, that I would use for utility purposes. A serrated Cricket has been reported to manage some mighty cutting duties but that is smaller than the Dodo. If she is dead set on a reverse-S knife, I'd show her the Cricket first and then the Matriach. Just my opinion.

does she want a knife to use or one for self defense?you could buy her the civilian, they can be found for $140-150 nowadays but its not really for utility. if she would like one more for general use, try one of the hawkbill spydercos. they are not the same as the reverse S but they are pretty nice. id reccomend the harpy or black frn handle tasman.

Civilian/Cricket/Matriarch are your best choices. Did you explain the those blade shapes are not built for utility? They are more aligned with self defense. Want a utility blade, get her a Delic/Endura FFG.

they matriarchs are hard to find, the only ones i know of are on ebay and they are so overpriced that you can just buy a nice g10 handle civilian for 20 bucks more.

There is a sprint run that I believe is still for selling through some of dealers. Brown FRN handles.

I would stay away from the civilian, but the matriarch has a thicker tip and is supposed to be able to handle utility duties.

Whats apealing about the reverse S grind to her? If its the curve, I'd go for a Tasman salt SE, IMO the best executed hawkbill around cutting wise.

:edit: Sprint run is all sold out most places, that was fast.

Get her a Tasman Salt. Then send it to me for a wave job.

yeah they sold out real quick. i dont think there will be anymore. i really believe its better to just pay a bit more for the civilian.

the op may also want to consider a superhawk.

I recently waved an older Matriarch for a member here. I'll wave anything that has a tip up carry option.

Spyderco states that the Civilian and Matriarch are NOT for utlity and won't warranty them if used for that purpose. I would stick with a Tasman Salt or a Spyderhawk if she wants a similar blade. Both are great for utility!

I find my Tasman Salt PE to be a good utility knife. I don't have any problems sharpening it on paper wheels(which might be a consideration if you go with PE). I find it to be better than my Spyderhawk for utility, as sometimes bigger isn't better. Just be sure she doesn't pull the thing out around non-knife people.

Only the Civilian, because the tip is wickedly thin on it.

From Spyderco's Matriarch description on their site:
"He wanted the attributes of the Civilian with its tremendous cutting effort but in a smaller size and thicker at the tip of the blade for general use. We made him the Matriarch which eventually was discontinued but is being revived for a limited time during the summer of 2010 as a Sprint Run."

@ CM:
One of these days you're going to wave a fixed blade just for the hell of it.

thanks for all the input guys ill show her my hawksbill blades tomorrow and discuss it with her, ill let you all know what she decides!
