This is a review of a sheath I won as part of a giveaway by Al Dodge, aka Pocketknifesheaths. Sorry, I don't have pictures of my sheath to post here, but Al has a bunch on his site and they are representative of the sheath I received from him.
This is a custom sheath, so when I won the giveaway, I had to tell Al the size I wanted (the closed length of the knife). I intended to get the sheath for a Case Mini Trapper that I never carried because the Chestnut bone was too pretty to throw in with my keys (I'm always a right front pocket carrier). But I'm cheap, so instead of getting a 3.5 inch sheath for the Mini Trapper, I told him to make a 3 and 7/8 inch sheath that could also carry my GEC Bullnose. (That Delrin scatches so easily!)
The sheath itself is incredibly made - everything from the construction, dye, stitching, leather quality and condition is absolutely excellent. The sheath comes with a soft lining on the inside, so there is no worry about the dye coming off the leather onto your knife (unlike what the Saddleback wallet did to my ATM card). The sheath comes gloriously stiff; it will eventually form around your knife.
When I first received the sheath, it was immediately obvious that it was designed for knives nicer than mine. It's a thick, substantial sheath that I believe Al designed it to protect custom slip joints. LEATHER THICKNESS? Just by handling the sheath, you can tell your knife is going to be well-protected.
The thickness and level of protection comes at a price. I ordered the version without the belt loop, because of my RFP preference. In my RFP most days: 5 keys, Leatherman Style CS, Fenix E01, Chapstick, Saddleback ID Wallet. Lots of stuff to scratch a knife. But, in all honesty, there simply isn't any room for this sheath. This sheath really demands to be in its own pocket. (Though I'm sure it would get along with the Chapstick.) So, if you carry stuff like me, the belt loop version may be a better option.
Trying to get a double-duty sheath made was a mistake. My sheath fits my GEC Bullnose perfectly tight. But it's just too big for my Mini Trapper. The end of the Mini Trapper barely peaks out of the sheath. Also, because the sheath has shaped itself around the Bullnose, the Mini Trapper now sits a bit loose in the sheath. So, if you are ordering for yourself, don't be cheap about it like me.
In closing, I highly recommend Al's work. Get it if you want soemthing worthy of your custom. Get the belt loop version. Get one for each knife you intend to sheath.
