I was never into the whole flipper phenomenon but had been watching this particular folder for a few years. It appeared on the forum exchange for half of its retail price so I was able to finally pull the trigger. I never really followed Gerrys work till recently. From what I see he does alot of frame locks and its not really my thing.. I also don't like carved titanium like on many of his knives so this one really spoke to me. I loved this knife due to the standard liner lock (which is pretty thick) and the fact that its bolstered with the same handle material on each side. I am also a sucker for pearl.
So anyway. I have used alot of folders through out the years. I find that I prefer flat grinds as they seem to cut better. Maybe its the thinner edge. On hollow ground blades the edge geometry to be weird. Like it gets thicker right at the cutting edge. This flipper is hollow ground I would say but the edge is so thin all the way down and works just like a flat ground blade. Not TOO thin. Its a sturdy blade. The bolsters and liners are orange peel finish titanium. The finish should hold up well to scratching I think. Blade is a good three inches, not to big.
This blade CUTS. I get alot of knives that don't have the same cutting power. This says something good about the maker IMO.
Also I am pretty impressed by the overall work. His attention to detail is outstanding. The lock up is perfect and there is no blade play. I have not found a mistake anywhere on this knife and i tried hard!
Anyone looking for a nice small knife to carry should consider one of Gerrys. They are hard to find but worth it, in my opinion. This knife cuts VERY well and feels great in the hand and rivals the top knife makers folders. I had heard there was some hype about this young maker a few years back and now I understand. Hes probably around 21 and I like seeing young talent coming into this knife world since I am 27 myself. .
Thanks Mark Strauss for letting me use these pics even after the knife is long out of your hands...
