I had a spot reserved for a JK Knife, and Stomper talked me into designing my own knife. Most of my outdoor knife use revolves around hunting, and I wanted kinda of a jack of all trades. Pitdog influenced a wider blade. Here is the result- Kentucky Woodsman

The micarta is mine, and the walnut is a friend's. The micarta handle is a little beefier than the walnut, but both feel good in the hand. Some in hand photos-

Continued....

So, I managed to get out for a couple hours this morning and play. It's been hot here with heat index of 103-110. Therefore I didn't actually start a fire.

It came shaving sharp. The belly of the blade shaved easier than the straight portion.

I've not made many fuzzy sticks but this worked just as easy as any other knife I have used for that.

While this wasn't designed for chopping, I had to try it. It works, just would be really slow. The drop at the rear of the handle makes it very comfortable to hold while chopping.

I used some cedar to make a base for a bow drill. The blade length would be the only limiting factor while batoning. The tip did just fine starting the divot. The spine is square and throws great sparks off a firesteel.

After all that I tried shaving again. The belly portion still shaved, while the straight portion wanted to but just not quite.

I enjoyed being out and look forward to using the Ky Woodsman hunting this fall when it's not as hot and the mosquitoes are gone. I found two ticks on me after I got home- I hate those things.

I like this one a lot. Looks like a well-fed Grohmann. Great design.

Been really liking the looks of walnut as a handle material lately. Very nice looking wood.

Great looking knife and the cedar is so beautiful I can almost smell it. :)

This won't do no good against skeeters, but go to a vitamin store like GNC and get the stankass garlic pills. Not the "Garlique" crap that Larry King used to peddle all the time but the stinkers. Take one a couple hours before you're going to go in the woods and then one four hours later if you are going to stay in there. As you sweat, you will sweat that garlic out and they will walk right off of you.

Garlic breff is easier to deal with than pullin' one of yur bag or somewhere else less pleasant. Hahaha!!! :D

Garlic huh ? I'll have to remember that.

Nice knife ... thanks for the review.

Cool blade! Pit really does make those fatter blades look useful. I like the design, you did a great job with that.

Garlic.. I eat garlic a lot.. must be why me and my dad never get tics that actually attach to us.

Not to take this off topic but you can also eat matches. The sulfur in the match head does the same thing just w/o the garlic breath, but it dont taste real good, I can promise you that. This was the only good the the matches in the MREs were good for.:)

You and Stomper did a great job creating that knife. Looks very practical to use and comfortable to hold -- sort of a hybrid of a Nessmuk and a Kephart.

I like that it's not overly large, too.

Wow. Johns work gets better and better. This design really speaks to me. Glad to see you out there using it.

I love red cedar. Its a very usefull tree.

Nice knife, it reminds me o bit of a beefier looking Canadian belt knife. I've seen a few of Stomper's knives I like.

Garlic works really well. So does sulphur water. When we lived out in Hillsborough County just north of Tampa our well was a sulphur water well. It really stank when you bathed, and it really smelled when you were drinking it...but it did wonders for helping to keep the biting little b@st@rds at bay

That looks fantastic. I've always been a fan of John's Nessmuks but that takes it to another level. Great design.

awesome review and pics.. i really like the looks of that knife... looks like a great companion...:D nice work once again John..

the misses and I swear by garlic too, for skeeters and ticks...:)

Nice knife & review ! Looks like the handle fits the hand perfect ! As for the garlic...I'll give it a try !

Great stuff buddy, love the design, I bet it will also be pretty handy at food prep when camping etc !
