Hello all, I was sitting around and pondering on what type of knife to buy this month, and I thought Hmmmmmm, I really want a balisong! Well next thing to do is choose which one out of all the cool ones on the market. I was poking around on the forums and saw that no one was really talking about the MT Dragonfly. I figured this would be a good starting point for a very inexperienced flipper to start. Especially since it didn't break the bank and still had the MT quality we all have grown to know very well. OK on to the knife. Firstly all of you bali lovers out there please understand that I am inexperienced in the way of the filp, so I am strictly talking about what little I know.
BLADE: This blade is 3.75" long and is the same shape as the more popular Tachyon however it is made out of Latrobe's 14-4 CroMo which I hear is just like Crucibel's 154-CM. I can't comment on edge holding as I only cut a few boxes today with the knife, but I will say this knife is friggin' sharp as hell. Anyhow, there is a black coating on the blade that looks like a Ti coating of some sort like was used on the older MT models. Mine is part serrated. The serrations are the same as on all the other MT models. Overall the blade looks substancial enough to be used for all sorts of chores.
HANDELS: These are made of aluminum and are anodized black which is very nice and compliments the blade for that cool tactical subdued look. There is a nice pattern of holes drilled into the handles. I don't know if this has any of function, but they look cool. The handle slabs are held together by 3 torx screws on both handles. Additionaly there is the MT claw design etched into each handle on both sides. I like this, but I have read that this isn't for everyone, however the claws are not etched so deep that they jump out at you. Nice touch MT. Each handle is fastened to the blade tang by a set of torx. I have not adjusted them, but they look like they are removable just like the Tachyon's. There is also a brass washer on both sides of the blade on both sides. I think that's a nice feature, especially sice MT could have gone cheapo and used teflon. The locking latch is nice and positively holds the handles together. It is also reversable.
FIT & FINISH: Overall this knife screams of MT quality! I know this knife is not a Tachyon, but for only $100.00 it is damn close. I've held both knives, and with the exception of aluminum handles instead of Titanuium and the new blade steel (which is supposed to be the same quality anyway) this is a great buy. By the way there is almost zero blade play. I guess there there has to be a tiny bit or other wise the handles wouldn't flip. I've compared this knife with the offerings from BM and although very different, I will say there is far less blade play on mine.
FLIPPING: OK I'm no expert and can only do the basic opening and closing. This knife is damn fast! That's all I can say since I have no real experience.
CONCLUSION: Overall I am very happy with this knife and will be carrying it as much as I can. MD is Balisong friendly so this shouldn't be a problem. I don't see a reason for not buying this knife. Definately not a waste of money.
