Review of folding box cutters - SuperKnife, Sheffield, Camillus, Kershaw, Meyerco

Thanks for the link. Just placed an order for a Camillus Crossfire -- I didn't know these things even existed! :D

OK, so I've played with the Superknife I and Superknife II, the Sheffield standard/quickchange AND Wood Grain, Meyerco and Camillus Crossfire. Here is my quick assessment:

Camillus Crossfire - shameful. Camillus is such a great name in modern cutlery, it's sad that they put out such a bad knife.

Superknife I - We all know the deal... need hex key to open.

Supeknife II - It's better than the Superknife I, but the push button to take the blade out not only hurt, it was a pain.

Meyerco - Not bad! Didn't feel too secure in the hand, but MUCH better than Superknife/Meyerco.

Sheffield - Hands down, the best of the bunch. All of them. Easy change (open AND close), feels nice in the hand. I prefer the lockback function for these knives more than the liner lock. Wood-grain was a bit heavy, but I gather it's for the outdoorsman.

All in all, I prefer the Sheffield.

This certainly proves the phrase: to each his own!

I've had my Camillus Crossfire for a couple of weeks now, and I really love it! Perhaps it's the pseudo-Axis-Lock... or it could be the light yet sturdy construction... or it could be the built-in blade holder for six spares. In any case, it's a winner in my book. :)

Right on Sky. The thing that disappointed me with the Camillus was the jingling of the five blades in the handle, and the feel of the construction. With the Sheffield (with the 5 blades in the handle), the blades did not move around. Eitherway, they both seem like quality pieces!!

There is a newer verson of the Superknife called the Superknife Edge. It is the original handle with a tool less push button blade change. I may pick one up.

I have the original Superknife and the original Sheffield. Both are good tools but the Superknife is lighter, slimmer, and easier to open/close. The use of an Allen key is a bit annoying but I keep the key on my keychain and blade changes are not that often.

Good info on those gold blades mentioned in the article. I'll get me a batch of those as well.

I just got my Superknife Edge. Same profile as the original Superknife but with a nifty push-button blade change that is easy to use. Basically the thumbstud is the blade change button. I was always paranoid about losing the allen screw on my original so this change is a great improvement. I wasn't really interested in the Superknife 2 Roundel due to the larger handle but the Edge will feel right at home in my pocket replacing my original SK. The Edge has a full liner on one side unlike the partial liner in my original. The aluminum handles are not finished as nicely on the Edge as they are on the original. I've only played with it a few hours but the action is stiffer on the edge. This may change with time, lube or adjusting the pivot.

I also got a batch of those gold blades from Home Depot. A bit pricey compared to Stanley but they look cool.
