A couple of days ago, I received my Spyderco Bub Lum Chinese folder. I ordered it from Michael Dye at New Graham Knives. He was very friendly on the phone, promptly e-mailed me tracking information and got me the knife in less than 48 hours. I mention him here because I am very pleased with the service I received. His site is found at http://www.newgraham.com/ (I am receiving nothing for this plug. I am only a customer.)

Now onto the knife:

Fit and finish:
The fit and finish is nice, but not 100%. There are tiny specs of missing color around the pivot and the backspacer is not completely flush with the scales. Besides this, it is a beautiful knife. The finish on the blade is sexy although it does pick up fingerprints extremely easily. So for fit and finish, I say 9 out of 10.

Pocket clip:
I think this is a feature which is sometimes overlooked. The clip is cool looking and extremely secure. In fact, the clip was way too tight out of the box. I have been breaking it in by wearing pants with thicker seams along the pockets. The clip is reversible for tip up or down carry, but not for lefties. It comes mounted tip down, but I switched mine to tip up. The switch was easy to make but now there is a shiny spot from where the clip used to be. It's not damage to the scale it's some sort of dried adhesive that was used to secure the clip. Anyone know a way to get this off without damaging the scale? Clip, 10 out of 10

Ergonomics:
I love the handle on this knife: It's so modest. The curvature of the handle works wonderfully to enhance the knife's cutting ability. This knife was clearly not meant for thrusting, so the lack of any guard is fine by me. Some people express concern over having aluminum handled knives: they are afraid of slickness. While this handle is slicker than zytel or g-10, it is more secure than a steel handle. The almite coating gives some traction. The file job on the back of the blade feels lovely under your thumb for close up work. A 10 out of 10.

Lock:
Boy do I hate liner locks! I promised myself months ago that I would not buy any more liner locks. I knew I would break this promise when I laid eyes on the Lum. Despite my hate for liner locks, I will say that the lockup on this knife is fantastic. The ball detent is quite robust and the blade is kept securely in the handle. After a quick break in, the liner lock now hits dead center with no play in any direction. 7 out of 10 (Only because I hate liner locks and would have preferred a compression lock.)

Blade:
What a knife is all about, and the Lum is all about it! A wide flat ground blade of VG-10: can you ask for a nicer slicer? This is my first VG-10 blade and boy does it get sharp! I love flat ground blades and now I can say that I love VG-10! I sharpen it on the 30 degree inclusive angle on the sharpmaker to compliment the grind on the blade. This thing just keeps on cutting and keeps on asking for more. It can turn on a dime, whittle, shave, slice, peel, skin.... you get the idea: it does anything you could ever ask from a knife this size. This blade can outperform knives of greater length. An enthusiastic 10 out of 10!

Overall, I feel that the $100 I spent on this knife was well justified. It's a real looker and it performs amazingly. When I take it out, even non-knife-knuts comment on its beauty. It carries very well due to its light weight and flat shape. My only complaint is the liner lock. Go handle one and see what I mean about the shape and feel of this knife.

Overall rating: 9 out of 10 I might give a 10/10 but I just can't stand giving anything a perfect rating.

Excellent review. I particularly like how you quantified all the things you like/dislike. I really need to get one of those for my pocket too...

Soon... soon...

The "mark" where the clip use to be was an adhesive of some kind. On www.spyderco.com forums Mr. Glesser said it would come off with some solvent.
It is a great knife!!
