Review of RD-7 or RD-9

you probably will want to differentiate between the saber ground models and the flat ground models, as their geometry will be much different and testing results will also be different. As for the steel, 5160 has been reviewed a trillion times and is known as a very durable big blade steel. Nothing new there. I would also add, that since Justin is good friends with Busse and Mike Stewart, and has probably gotten tons of tips from both he more than likely has a ton of knowledge on grinding and heat treating steels. I would recommend his knives in a heart beat based on that and have bought them myself just recently. I will get a chance to use them once I am all healed up from an accident(non-knife that is)

Also, for how much he sells those knives I don't think you can go wrong, much in the same way you can't go wrong with Swamp Rat.

I didn't know that there are saber ground models and flat ground models. That's important for me.

Thank you Cobalt!

I bought one from Brigade Qtrmasters. Very heavy. Very dull. Rough workmanship covered up by nasty "crinkle coat" black epoxy stuff.
Wonderful handle. Mine was hollow saber grind. Took it to the water wheel for most of one Saturday. Tool rest wore black stuff off and I could see the rough machine marks on the blade. Finally took a razor edge. Good steel. Good chopper/pry bar/club. Gave it to a good friend who has the ability to break almost anything. Bet he won't break the RD-7! I replaced it with a Becker Combat/Bowie with a 9" blade that weighs less and chops better. As far as toughness goes though, I doubt that you could find a stouter knife than the RD-7. Blade is actually about 8" and 1/4" thick. If a heavy, tough knife is what you want, the Ranger RD-7 is it. I would highly recommend the flat grind, unless you are a lunatic like me who will spend a day off grinding!
