Hi guys !
Today i'm doing a review i promised to Kornalski, about the blade he made for me.
Firstly, you must know i'm not a blade or a steel expert, i'm just a random guy who likes knives. I was not payed to do this review and nothing was given to me for doing this, this is a review I wanted to do it for YOU guys cause i love kornalski's designs and never seen someone talking about him.
I have always liked knives, sharp things i should say, and i've got suiss army knives, stuff like this, but i never had a REAL knife.
A year ago my father offered me a little crkt M16 tanto, i can't say it's the best knife but i used it a LOT.
I started working so i could offer my first two moras, a flex and a pro, that i still use a lot.
And beacause i was every day looking at custom blade, with nice steels, i felt one day on kornalski knives, and i knew what i wanted.
I started talking with Adam Kornalski, a very cool guy, who asked me what specs i wanted.
And pretty much a month after, i had my first blade, with a design i always liked on blades, with my specs, so it could slice, get beaten and still cut a long time.
It was the ODC125.
I will put the price (that is very reasonable to me for what you get) if kornalski gives me the permission but i don't wanna do without it's permission.
You know you will have a good day when you recieve a package with the name of a custom knife maker on it.
I have to say the package was well protected and came intact. There was no risk that the blade would be damaged.
The package contained two pieces of paracord, the sheath, a tecklock with it's screws, a Kornalski card, and the knife.
There are the specs :
The knife itself is 9.8'' OAL.
The blade is 4.7'' long and 0,185'' thick, made of Vanadis 4E hardened to 62HRC.
It is 0.015'' thick after the edge.
The handle is in greyblue micarta with red liners.
I took the knife in my hand and liked the handle, it felt very confortable, it was my first time carrying a micarta handle and the material is much harder than i thought.
I tried cutting my hair, and man, it was jumping out of my arm like nothing !
The sheath was nice and tight, with a small blade play i never felt when walking with the knife.
0.015'' thick behind the edge was much thinner than i expected ! The contrast between the red liners and the greyblue handle is gorgeous to me !
The only two things i found that weren't perfect were the very small space between the handles and the blade at one part of the handle, like pretty much nothing, but i was afraid that water would go in this small space and would attack the steel.
At the start i tested and some micro water drops could go into it, but after two days of use, i never had again this problem and thought i used the knife in contact with water, i never had rust, only a patina that appeared very fast but pretty much desapeared now (??).
The second small problem was with the sheath, that had been damaged when kornalski put the screws on it.
Because of it's position, i thought it would never be bigger than this but it grew and kornalski offered me to send him the knife so he could make a new sheath.
I will send him back the knife because sadfully it grew with normal use.
Let's begin with the tests !
I started making the classical test, first chopping a small branche, then battoning it, and then making some featherstick.
I think i have chosen the worse piece of wood EVER.
It was olive wood that passed in a forest fire, and man, it was hard. I couldn't make feathersticks out of it.
The test didn't convinced me so i went for another test two days later on pine wood.
Same test, this time the wood was softer (of course) and the blade went through everything with ease.
I could see abolutely no microdamage of any kind after use.
(It's my first time feathersticking, be clement please
)
And because it wasn't enought to me, i made more tests in the french alps. The perfect place to challenge this blade.
I used it pretty much every day for cutting branches, making tips of wood, to try the edge retention and thoughness of the vanadis 4E.
The last piece of wood was particularly hard to baton since it was twisted and it took me a lot of time but i think no knife could have done much better.
This time i stabbed wood and felt on something ultra hard that micro damaged the tip, it was so little you could only feel it with the nail. With 3 stone passes it was gone.
I had to prepare essential survival food too
D.
And well, the conclusion is that i just love this knife, the 125mm of blade are perfect for general use, the handle has no hot spot, the sheath, thought it has a small damage, has excellent retention, the tecklock ables me to carry it horizontally.
The vanadis 4E is definitly excellent, and i have to say, i didn't think a steel could have both super thoughness and such edge retention, cause i never had to sharpen it and i still never did, but it's still sharp enough to cut hair.
If i had two things to say to Kornalski about this knife so it could be perfect they would be, firstly, that the sheath could be slightly more tight, and the holes could have the same space between each so you can put the tecklock everywere.
Then, the handles could be even closer to the blade.
But believe me this knife would be much more expensive than this if the finish and the sheath were absolutely perfect.
If i had to buy another fixed blade, i would surely first contact Kornalski, because it's blade designs are exactly what i'm looking for, the steel choices are excellent, and the knives are simply good.
Sorry for the mistakes i made if there are.
