Todd was kind enough to send a couple my way to test out for a few weeks. Here are my thoughts:
Looks and Features
At first glance I had to laugh at just how small it really is. I was very skeptical. There is no way a knife that small would be good at cutting anything. Boy, was I wrong! I carried a Hornet as my primary EDC for two weeks and it did all that I asked of it and more. It is a 2 1/2 (possibly 3 if you have smaller hands) finger knife but with the contour of the handle it feels far more comfortable than most of my smaller sized knives that have double the handle length. I know someone with very very large hands that owns one as well and he speaks just as highly about it's fit. The finish is amazing. I believe the handles on the two that I played with are dyed curly maple but Todd is amazing with handles and can just about anything. The lanyard hole allows for the placement of a lanyard that makes the little knife feel even better in the hand. There are two areas of jimping allowing for superb grip in many different positions. The leather sheath is perfect. It's a little belt sheath that is low-profile enough to be used as a neck carry sheath as well. The retention is almost like kydex, there is a faint little click when the knife is inserted into place.
Use
As I said, this knife has been the only blade I have used for the past 2 weeks. I have used it to cut food, paper, paracord, open boxes and packages and anything else that needed cutting or slicing. I even used the very pointy tip to dig a sliver out of my finger. (And on a side note--the point is very sharp and stings just like a real hornet--nicely named Todd). There wasn't anything I asked of this knife that it didn't do. Now I wouldn't go batoning through some firewood with this thing but I bet it would handle that task just fine too.
Here are the specs:
Overall length: 4 1/8 inches
Blade length: 1 1/2 in length
Thickness: 1/8 inch
Steel: O1 tool steel with a heat treat of 59-60 RC
Blade shape: warncliffe
I highly recommend owning one of these blades. They are a phenomenal EDC knife. Todd runs a full custom shop so he can really make it to suit you perfectly. And he really listens to what you want and doesn't just make what he thinks you want.
Here are a few shots of the blades he sent me. The first three are for size comparison, the rest are just me having some fun outside.
In my hand
Next to a Becker BK14 and a Victorinox Huntsman
Hunt Hornet and Streamlight Microstream: and EDC match made in Heaven
