These were offerred for sale last week, and I lucked into the last one.
First, general stuff. David has a reputation for making very sharp knives. He offered 4, with handle materials of Ipe, Purple Heart, and Bubinga. All of these are excellent, dense woods with beautiful grains, so I really didn't care which wood I got. I got Bubinga.
I payed via paypal, and the knife arrived on Thursday. The knives come with sheaths, which are simple and functional. I'll make another one when I get a chance, but this one fits and works.
The knife itself is a very nice size, just under 7.25" long. 3.75 of that is wood, but the blade has a deep choil about 1/4" long at the rear of the blade. In combination, this provides a very sturdy grip, and I don't fear that my hand will slip up onto the blade. I feel like I have good gross control, as well as subtle control for caving or fine work.
The knife is nicely balanced, and feels very good in my hand. The scales are minutely different, so that the knife is just off of symmetrical. This is not really a criticism, it is just enough difference to remind you you're dealing with a hand made piece.
There was a minor blemish on the spine just behind the tip, but I was not sure what it was. I wrote David a letter describing the bklemish, and he quickly responded telling me exactly what was up. He told me how to fix it, and also offerred to fix it himself. It was easy to fix, and is now undetectable.
Sharp. Yes. Very very sharp.
I feel like I got a great deal, and look forward to years of service from this knife. I think it would have been cheap at twice the price, a good deal at 3 times.
I don't think I need to put any disclaimers in, but I've not received or been offerred any consideration for writing this. Darn it.
Are these reviews welcome/helpful? what other info would you like for me to add? Anything to leave out?
