A couple of days ago i received a Model 10 Karambit from Richard Derespina. It came very well packed and in a timely fashion. On first glance it looks very high speed. It has a very nice kydex sheath with very positive retention. A belt loop for inside-the-pant carry secures it to the belt to prevent it from sliding down. Also the sheath has a Tec-Lock that can be moved around the sheath for countless carry posibilities. The Karambit's specs are as follows (taken from Rich himself
):
approx 2 1/2" blade.
approx 6 3/4" OAL
3/16" thick
AUS 10 steel RC 58
Black textured G10 scales.
So specs out of the way, lets get ot bussiness. The fit and finish are superior. The G10 scales are very well finished and are perfectly even with the steel. The ergos of the handle are perfect, it always points the right way no matter how you grab it, very instinctive (sp?). The ring is big and confortable. A big turn off for me on the Emerson K-bit is that the ring is too small for my big prison guard fingers
, not to mention the chisel grind which I never liked much. Also, the Model 10 ring is very well polished inside and out. If you like to use the K-bit in an extended position a lot, you'll appreciate this feature (woohooo no blisters!
). The Mod 10 is very light but it feel and hits solid. Being so slim and light one would think the contrary but its built like a tank, not too heavy, not too light. This thing is lightning-fast!
The Model 10 sports some very nice grind lines. The primary edge did not come out of the box scary sharp. It was popping hairs but I like my knives like razors, so a couples of minutes on my Lansky and it was almost too sharp (is there such a thing?
). AUS steels, IMO, have that property of taking up one of the sharpest edges I know. Edge retention is pretty good for AUS10. I ordered mine with a sharpened spine (costs extra) and Rich put some very wicked serrattions and and edge towards the point. This thing its just nasty? When flicked out those serrations deliver a nasty tear of the target. Me likey
.
I've EDC this knife and I find that while using the Tec-Lock on a high-ride position is the most comfortable for me but it prints a little through my big shirt but not much. Wearing it inside-the-pant its the most discreet way but its not as confortable. Like I said the Kydex sheath provides great retention while allowing for a very fast draw.
Those who like K-bits as a novelty and those who like them because of their Self-Defense purpose will notice that the Derespina Model 10 adapts well to their SD style. I think this is one of the bests K-bits out there and at $85 is a bargain for such a well made semi-custom piece.
