Can anyone comment on the BK11 "Becker Necker" by BK&T? I am curious about its usability, especially the comfort of the handle. I am looking for a good lightweight fixed blade to carry backpacking and thought this might be appropriate.

Thanks for the info...

I have been thinking the same thing about this knife. I have had other becker knives and was very pleased with them. I hope someone can fill us all in.

I haven't used mine much yet, but I wouldn't carry it as my primary fixed blade knife while backpacking. The handle would be uncomfortable with extended use. You could wrap the handle with something, but it is still pretty short.

Given the amount of space in a backpack I would pick a knife that has a longer and more comfortable handle. I assume you still want to conserve weight. I would look at an AG Russell Bird and Trout with a thin 3" D2 alloy blade (about $50) or a Cold Steel All Terrain Hunter (about $40) (see links). Both of these are light. The Cold Steel has essentially the same alloy as the Becker while the Russell has a tool steel alloy blade that is a little less tough, but much more wear resistant.

Don't forget the Cammillus Arclite, esp. the AG Russel D2 version. Very light, very useful, very comfortable handle once you wrap it. It's practically weightless so it's always there when you need it, and a pleasure to use.

"...a good lightweight fixed blade to carry backpacking".

That would be the Gerber Yari. It was recently DC'd by Gerber, but it is a knife that really is worth looking for.

I just ordered a Arclite, but with the 420HC... You can get it in D2?!   Who sells it? :D

A.G. Russell has the exclusive on the d2 version.
I bought one from him and had TAZ put a micarta handle on it - sweet!!

Give Roger at knifeworks.com a call. He scared up a Yari for me last month.

Thanks for the tip. Silly me thought A.G. Russell was a custom knife maker, and now I see it's a knife store. :)

Big price difference for the D2 steel... I guess if I wind up really likeing the cheaper version I might consider that one. I'll have to see how sharp I can get that 420HC. :) I don't plan on using it a lot.
