What do u think of this knife ?

http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?BOAF11

This knife seems interesting but it is using:

440c steel
Delrin ( never heard of it )
and I cannot get the normal double edge knife with a Kydex sheath :(

I would think they would be better off upgrading their knife to S30V with G10 handles or Micarta.

Thank you

JB :)

These knives are quite good, especially for the money. They are the nicest A/F knives at anywhere near this price. Delrin is a fiberglass reinforced nylon. It makes an excellent handle for this type of knife. The handle has removable weights inside to adjust the balance. I suspect they are made of stainless steel and not lead (lead is toxic). I’ve never looked. 440C is good steel. It is tough enough, holds an edge well, and is quite corrosion resistant. The fit, finish, and materials are good. If you upgraded the materials, the knife would be a lot more expensive and really wouldn’t serve it’s intended purpose much better. I don’t like the serrations on the blade. I thought it was possible to get the regular blade with a kydex sheath. I have the Desert Storm version of this knife. My knife has a black coated stainless steel guard instead of brass. It has a regular, unserrated dagger blade. The handle is tan colored delrin. The sheath is a desert camo kydex one. I’m not sure if the Desert Storm version is still available. Look at the other knife stores on the Internet. I think you’ll find the regular, unserrated blade with a kydex sheath somewhere. There are other blade options as well. I like the knife and highly recommend it.

The Applegate-Fairbairn is great as it is. I've been into tantos for maybe 16 years before getting my AF this spring and I've been instantly converted to daggers, especially the AF, for fighting knives of this size, though I still prefer tantos for small fighteres and hard-use utility knives. The AF is very light and the balance is perfect. Rex Applgate knew what he was doing when he designed this knife. It is a fighter, and IMO 440C is good enough for this use. It is also good for a utility knife in this price range too. Upgrading the steel would only be useful in a utility knife, IMO, and would only lead to a rise in cost. Changing the handle to micarta would drastically change the balance and weight since micarta is much heavier than derlin. G-10 might be good, but it would still drive up the costs. A special edition AF with a G-10 handle and a high end steel might be a good idea, but IMO the AF is already the best fighter for its size. There is a special edition model with damascus steel and a wood handle, but the price is very high. The only problem I see with it is that it is illegal to carry in many places but fortunatly I can carry any knife I want to in AZ. :D

Except for the boot knife, I don't really like the sheaths for EDC. If you will have a concealment sheath made anyway it would be better to save money and get the SF with the nylon sheath unless you really want the one with serrations.

I have a completely black version with kydex sheath, very nice knife and incredible good balance! But I just can't get this knife razor sharp...:grumpy:
