I want to get my father a knife. He isn't into one hand opening knives and is left handed so i figured a more traditional lockback would be a good choice. He also prefers larger knives. I got him a Buck 110, which he carried in his pocket instead of sheath. He recently broke the tip off of the 110. I think the Goliath would be a good choice. It is lighter than the 110, so would make for better pocket carry. The tip also doesn't look so fragile. What do you think? Good choice?

I had one awhile back, remember that it is a BIG folder. never tried to fit it into my pocket, think it might be to big for that, but then I would say the same about a 110. The quality and all else are good though.

My dad is a really BIG guy. He wears a size 16 ring. He didn't have any trouble carrying the 110 in his pocket, as a matter of fact he is carrying an extra large voyager until I get him a replacement. I figured the light weight of the Goliath would make it a little easier.

How strong are they? Do they make for good work knives? Keep in mind he tends to use his knives hard.

The Goliath is a great knife IMO, a sleeper I guess, as it's been discontinued. I've had one for about 3 years, it's a good work knife. It is NOT a prybar though, that's for sure. It is one great slicer and carries quite nicely in my back jeans pocket, as it is really quite light for it's size. My only complaint is the lack of a thumb stud, I do like my knives to open one handed.
I posted a thread about the Goliath several months back, as a member of the Mega-folder family that had been overlooked. I would love to have one in premium steel! As a matter of fact, I'm having a knife made for me by Ray Rogers, that is quite similar to the Goliath, although it is a design of his own, the Chupacaba. The "Chupi",
has titanium sales, a BG42 blade in a trailing point style, with 4" inches of sharpened edge! The whole thing will be about 10.5" long open! The Goliath is about 9.5", so you get an idea of the scale.
Anyway, I think your Dad would like the Goliath as a hard use knife and it's available at a price point that would allow purchase of a 2nd as a back up. The sheath that comes with the Goliath also will accept the Strider/Buck folders.

I think it will be the perfect knife for him. He doesn't do one handed openings, doesn't like pocket clips, likes big knives, and wants a steel that is easy to sharpen.

Sounds like I made a good decision. I will let you all know what I think when it gets here.

When I was selling / trading knives I sold a lot of Goliath's to local deer hunters. All
of them REALLY liked the knife as it was light ,sharp and strong . It's also
was very easy to clean. If your dad is about my age (mid 50's) my guess is he'll
really like this knife.

Right on the money. I think he will really like it. Too bad they have been discontinued. Sounds like a great knife.

shootist16: Sounds like a great gift for him. A couple of thoughts ... you might consider the titanium-handled 110. That's a great knife that's not quite as heavy. And I understand that your pop broke the tip off his old 110, but that certainly doesn't mean they have "fragile" tips. Accidents can and do happen - still, the fact of the matter is that, for rugged durability, I'd put the good old Folding Hunter up against anything!

Do let us know how it works out. I always love the opportunity to give a knife as a gift.

Sadly, my dad never seems to break or lose the last one I gave him. :( It's a little keychain SAK and he uses it all the time. Says he wouldn't want to carry anything else. :)

The 110 is a tough as nails folder. Unfortunately I believe he was prying with it and broke the tip.

I considered the titanium model but would probably be keeping that one myself ;)

The 446 came in today. I think it is the perfect knife for my dad. The handles really fill the hands, something he really needs for his big mits. The knife came shaving sharp and there is no blade play at all. Very lightweight for such a big knife. '

I will follow up after he gets it and has put it to use.

Wonderful!! I hope he really likes it. A big knife for a big fella and the
great Buck Warranty. A perfect match. Keep us posted please. Enjoy!!

Happy to report that my Dad still loves the knife. He really uses it. It is one tough folder. He uses it all day on the ranch. I sharpened it yesterday for him. 1st time it has been sharpened. it would still cut the cord used to bail hay but wasn't shaving sharp. I had it back to hair popping sharp in no time with my sharpmaker. I was amazed at how easily it took an edge. The Goliath is undoubtedly a workhorse of a folder. My Dad is one happy camper with his Goliath.

Dennis,
Glad your Dad likes his knife. Remember to send the 110 with the broken tip back to us so we can repair it for you. Then he will have 2 good knives.
