Just my own opinion - I do know there are those who share it and others who totally renounce it - I hope I do not come about as a someone trying to start trouble but I welcome inputs as I always have to build or denounce my knowledge to help my taste in custom knives grow...
I own a few bladerigger items the spinal backup rig, the assosciate rig, the credit card blade, omega3, a bamboo kwaiken (used to) as well as an archangel 2 set.
My AA2 is all black with a finger pinch cord housed in a rigger sheath. The edge, as GigOne mentioned is apocalyptically scary sharp, ground to a zero edge that will cut NO QUESTIONS asked and no inhibitions shown. It is a serious blade in all respects from carry, feel and function.
Sharp as it is.. keep in mind that this is ground to zero thus you trade off edge durability to razor sharpness. How JSP heat treaing will stand up to hitting a zipper on a BG's leathe rjacket I dunno yet - it is all up to your proposed use for the blade. Utility or quick defense?
The knife as a package is quite impressive in fact the first time I held it in my hand I thought that it transceneded the "definition" of a knife - as it doesn't look like one at all and doesn't feel like your conventional knife.
It grips flawlesly, handles and feels very well balanced in the forward grip and if the the finger cord at the butt of the handle didnt get in the way it would flip into the reverse grip flawlessly and smoothly.
The sheath is also very well done.. the rigger coat matches and flows well into the handle and has a nice seamless finish to it like all of JSP's sheaths.. very acute attention to detail. The assosciate rig (and other rigs) commands its own review but hands down I think JSP's carry systems are the best in its class - comfortable, doesn't ride or drag or fall and I can even take a nap with the rig on no problem. I think that says much with a rig as I have had other rigs before that I just wanted to get rid of like dirty underwear.
However, despite how cool I thought the blade was I have my issues - I think the way the blade is ground seems plain (easy and less room for error?) (and having amateurly ground a few blade blanks I wonder how easy it is to grind a .5 inch flat ground bevel versus a deep high hollow grind) with a 1/2 - 1 inch single bevel - the blade grind doesnt look fancy and is downright ugly in comparision to other custom knives but I am attracted to its simplistic look and minimalistic design.
My main issue is with the price of the knife. 400-500.00 for a 3-4 inch blade seems like a lot of money when I think I could get a 12 inch narita kwaiken/tanto for the same price range. (reminder yes I have and still own an archangel2)
there are other issues to address like the superb heat treating as I have heard, sadly I have not totally abused my archangel to test it's power. I welcome input on this.
Is it worth the few hundred bucks?? In my opinion if you can afford and like the plain, simple and straight to the point look of the archangel and cal afford it by all means get it. I dunno how useful the 5.00 pinch cord or the 15-20.00 beads will be (but I have looked for ceramic custom beads before and they're not cheap apparently.. still...) but if you can get a barebones aa2 for a good price go for it.
I also think that it takes a special taste to like this knife, I for one like the whole mininmalist museum of modern art retro design in items from furniture to desktop accesories so I had to get an aa2. (I am still thinking if I want those 20.0 aluminum salt n pepper shakers though
)
Is it worth the 400-500? I am debating this question myself - but I am the same person who has yet to understand (or afford) a Hartsfield or an Emerson Custom.
Just my thoughts - in general I would say that if you fancy the idea of decorating your apartment with leather and steel (like me), want a blade that you wont double guess if its sharp or not, and apprecaite a concealable superhero look then get one. I would have bought the aa2 eons ago if it were 200.00-300.00 but for 400.00 - 500.00 I had to take some time to think about it.
